5 Ideal Locations for a Composting Toilet

 By: Ellen Bell
There are an almost limitless number of applications for composting toilets. These water saving, odorless, eco friendly fixtures can be installed literally anywhere because they don't require hookup to a traditional sewer line or septic tank. With that in mind, what are some of the best locations for them? In this article, we've compiled five of the most ideal locations where composting toilets could be installed.

1. Rural homes
Most homeowners in rural or remote areas must rely on septic tanks for their waste management. However, as many of these homeowners know, not all locations are well suited for septic tank installation. If you live on rocky ground, for example, it can be nearly impossible to put in a septic system with all the necessary laterals. Composting toilets are an excellent alternative because they are far less expensive to purchase and install up front, plus you will realize residual savings over the long run because they cost less to maintain and don't use as much water.

2. Barns or sheds
In rural areas, there are often times a few outbuildings on the property such as a barn, work shed, or other structure. While it would be nice to have a restroom facility in these remote outbuildings, most farmers don't bother installing a toilet because of the expense of hooking it into their home's septic system. With a small composting toilet, any location can become a restroom easily and without a lot of expense.

3. Parks
Whether it's a small city park, or a larger state or national recreation area, waste management in outdoor settings can be a challenge. Access to sewers isn't always available, and outhouses aren't a popular option for the public, because of their odor and unsanitary nature. Compost toilets can be a great option in park settings, provided that some basic signage is posted in the restroom facilities to educate the public about how to use them.

4. Pool houses
Having a restroom facility in a pool house is almost a necessity if you have a nice home. Children who are dripping wet with chlorinated pool water can quickly ruin carpet or hardwood floors by constantly going in and out of your main house to use the bathroom. If you don't want to go to the expense of running sewer lines out to your pool house, consider installing a composting toilet instead. Because they are odorless, they are great for indoor or residential applications, and since they are completely self-sufficient, you won't have to worry about expensive plumbing or hook-ups for installation.

5. Boats and RVs
Anyone who's ever owned a boat or recreational vehicle knows that waste management is a real pain. Periodically, you must stop at a pump out station where you pay money to pump the waste from a holding tank. It's an unpleasant job and also a hassle for busy travelers on the go. Composting toilets are the perfect solution because you'll never have to pump them out or remove anything. They are designed to handle all waste on their own, without ever needing to be hooked up to any type of external maintenance equipment.

As you can see, composting toilets provide a sanitary and low cost solution for waste management in many different locations. The examples we've provided are just a few out of hundreds of possible applications for waterless composting toilets. No matter where the location, compost toilets make it possible to have a restroom there that is clean, odorless, and self sustaining without going to a lot of trouble or expense.
