The acai berry has gained momentum as the number one superfood. Although the term "superfood" is over used among health food circles, the acai berry is well deserving of this title.

It comes from a palm tree in Brazil that can reach heights of up to 60 feet high in the amazon rain forest. The clusters of berries are hand picked by locals who depend on the berry for economic support. It also aids in preserving the rainforest by warding off loggers and big business.

The berries are squeezed and the seeds discarded leaving a dark purple juice with lots of pulp. The natives have used the juice in their local recipes for centuries. They believe heavily in its healing properties and consume it to cure everything from headaches to infections. Today the acai berry is most commonly freeze-dried to preserve the nutritional qualities and sold to developed countries for its many health benefits. Some of the highlights and recognition concerning the nutritional qualities are as follows.

  • Dr Perricone, in his bestseller- "The Prerricone Promise" picks acai fruit as the #1 Super Food in the world.

  • In 2005, Oprah named Acai the #1 Super Food, saying "This little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world".

  • "Rich in antioxidants and amino acids, acai is thought to be one of the most nutritional fruits of the Amazon basin. "New York Times, 8/4/2004".

  • Acai has 10 times the antioxidant power of red grapes and twice that of blueberries.

It also contains amino acids (which are unheard of in fruits) and is also a good source of protein, fiber, vitamin A and B, and contains the same essential fatty acids as olive oil.

These are only a few of the scientifically proven benefits which can impact your health in several ways. The concentration of antioxidants helps prevent against heart disease and cancer. (Dr. Strand) It has even been shown to eliminate leukemia cells 85% of the time in clinical studies.

The list goes on and on. I have dedicated the last 3 years of my life researching the power of antioxidants and the importance of a healthy diet.
