Allergy Relief Can Come From The Garden

 By: Farah Wahida
They strike unexpectedly. One moment you are still enjoying the great outdoors. The next you begin to itch, you develop a rash and you begin to sneeze. Your immune system has noticed something it does not like and has gone into attack mode. When that happens, you need allergy relief.

Your mood may also be affected by allergies. A study found recently that as the dark cloud of allergy hangs over us, people tend to get depressed. There is even an increase in the number of suicides when there are a lot of pollen in the air.

Scientists believe that allergic reactions are caused by a combination of our genetic makeup and sometimes microscopically small objects in our environment. These include pollen, mold spores, pet dander and dust mites. We can also react to food or medicine.

Medication such as antihistamine and nasal decongestant can relieve the symptoms of allergic reactions. Modern medicine offers some good and potent options available at the chemist. Numerous people still have faith in the traditional natural remedies and various forms of plant life are used effectively as nature's remedies.

Eucalyptus is probably the best known natural decongestant. It is an ingredient in cold and flu medicine. Garlic does the same job. For a tight chest and blocked nasal passages take horseradish and you may be on your way to feeling better soon. Some people believe eating honey is the sweet way to take care of the red-eyes and itching throat. According to them eating a teaspoon a day keeps the pollen at bay. Stick with this remedy until the sniffle season is over. Stinging nettle is good to stop a running nose. A dried extract from this plant's leaves can be bought as capsules from your local chemist. Stinging Nettle can be a powerful antioxidant and contains chlorophyll, vitamin C and iron.

Nature also has very small allergy-fighters called probiotics. They are live micro-organisms, mostly bacteria not unlike the beneficial ones found in our stomachs. Probiotics are found in food or may be bought in pill-form. Natural yogurt is one inexpensive source of these mini soldiers. They go on the attack when the immune system detects nasty intruders like dust mites, pet dander and mold spores.

Of course there are also many remedies available at the pharmacy. To determine which one is best for you, you should know what caused the allergy in the first place. It is always a good idea to ask your doctor to do a test. Some available allergy medicines are the antihistamines. They can be very effective but several may have side-effects, especially drowsiness. Leukotriene modifiers are used not only for allergies but also for asthma. Homeopathic remedies can also be helpful.

Next time the sniffles and sneezes hit, do not despair. Allergy relief could be at hand. You may find it at the pharmacy or maybe it is growing in a garden near you.
