Amazing Badulla

Badulla is one of the few cities in Sri Lanka that consists both the upper and lower regions. Giving you a taste of the upper region in Sri Lanka and also the lower region while staying in the same city. You can witness tea, vegetable and paddy cultivation with your vacation to Badulla.

Overshadowed by the Namunukula range of mountains sits Badulla, one of the major cities in the lower central hills of Sri Lanka. You might have already pictured a city with mountains and a quite cold weather.

But to your surprise, this city is blessed with both the upper and lower regions where you can see tea, vegetable and paddy cultivation. Home to many of the famous tourist attractions, it has even been a regional hub for the British Rulers.

Dunhinda falls is one of those tourist attractions that is one of the many reason people come to Badulla often. Standing at 63 m high it’s one of the most famous waterfalls that Sri Lanka is blessed with.

The best time to see the Dunhinda falls is June and July, but they are worth the visit at any time of the year. Don’t forget to take a few memorable snaps on your visit there because a photo speak a thousand words as they say.

Believed to be one of the Solosmasthana, is the Muthiyangana temple. Solosmasthana are the sixteen sacred places in Sri Lanka which the Buddhists believes were visited by Gautama Buddha otherwise known as “the Buddha”. This is an ancient Buddhist temple located graciously in the middle of Badulla which is visited by not only Buddhists and locals but also by many tourists from around the world.

If you’re a history enthusiast, head on to St. Mark’s church, the church consisting of a plaque commemorating Major Rogers an elephant hunter, and the tale behind him.

According to the legend, after a passing a thunder storm in 1845, Rogers has been struck by lightning. Souls of elephants he killed in 4 years probably trumpeted in joy! It is also said that Rogers’ gravestone is cracked in half, surely by another bolt of lightning. Head onto the church and if you’re a catholic you can even offer your prayers and make this journey even more beautiful.
