An Account of Different Perfumes

‘Per Fumum’ is the Latin phrase that parented the word Perfume meaning through smoke. If you would like to know why such a phrase was given to fragrance, we should go back to the pages of history. If you are a perfume lover and have a soft corner for fragrances in your heart, you won’t dislike understanding about the history of perfume. Perfumery or art of perfume making started in Egypt. Fragrance was used in religious functions at that time. Egyptians used to glow incense - made with aromatic herbs, gum and spices. So there used to be lot of smoke and maybe that is the cause they used to call it ‘per fumum’.

Though the relation between fragrance and flower is easy to formulate, ancient men did not use flowers to make perfume. Aromatic herbs and spices like almond, myrtle, conifer coriander, resin, bergamot etc. were used in perfume making. It’s still an issue whether ancient perfume had any other purpose apart from diffusing smell and creating the holistic ambience for worshipping. It is also unknown that ancient men were aware of pheromones and aromatherapy.

Along with Egyptians, people of Rome, Greece, Palestine, China and East Asia were also familiar with incense and was associated with religious rituals than personal usage. Even the Old Testament and New Testament document the usage of scents during religious functions.

Perfume for men and women, discount fragrance, unisex perfume, womens fragrance all are for individual use and generally set up in liquid form. Persia is the place where liquid perfume was first prepared. One Persian doctor as well as chemist invented the liquid fragrance for both men and women. This invention was unlike in many aspects. First, it was offered in liquid format, hence, no fumes. Secondly, with herbs and spices, this doctor used flowers in preparation for the first time.

It was a blend of oil, crushed herbs, spice and petals. Rose water is said to be invented at the same time in Persia and it gained popularity immediately. Earliest emperors from Asia and Middle East are said to spread rose water globule and walk throughout the mist; the royal way of wearing perfume!

Perfumery came in Europe at some stage in Fourteenth Century and it was the turning point as modern perfume started receiving its shape. The nascent form of perfume was developed by Hungarians. They just blended perfumed oils and alcohol to prepare perfume. This became popular in Europe and got the name Hungarian Water.

France, the county famous for fragrances, discount perfume, designer perfumes, cologne and different kind of sophisticated perfume, now comes under discussion. Perfumery came in France during Renaissance. It was in France, where first flower cultivation started to prepare perfumes and fragrances. The technical advancements that western countries observed during Renaissance helped perfumery a lot. Improved distillation techniques and improvements of chemistry just boosted perfumery. France still stands to be the ‘fragrance center’ of the world.

Perfumery is a blend of both science and art. All the countries have started bottling scented liquid for men and women. Famous brands are often shipped for foreign customers. So fragrance is a part of groom that helps persons to develop personality and identity.
