My son is the oldest and as with many oldest in a family he is very responsible and a high achiever. Our oldest daughter is very soft spoken and kind hearted. She is constantly reaching out to anyone or anything in need. Our youngest daughter is hell on wheels. She is a dare devil and thrill seeker. There are times when my husband and I joke that if she had been our first born we would only have one child. She was able to get out of her crib by age nine months. She has never wanted to miss out on one minute of anything that is going on around her.
Although their personalities are very different from one another the children get along very well. One thing that they all share is their love of animals. They are the only children I know of that actually pooled their money and watched the news paper for ads for animals for sale so that they could buy them. We were lucky that we had a large garden shed and a large yard to accommodate all the animals for sale ads that the three of them answered. I also love animals so I did not discourage them from getting the animals; however I did start to realize that the food for the menagerie of pets was starting to cost more than our grocery budget. We had three rabbits, two dogs, four cats a parakeet, many fish and a turtle. My main rule was that there were to be no reptiles in the house. I did not mind the turtle, but I refused to have snakes, lizards or and other crawling reptile.
One night I was especially tired and was sitting in front of the television fighting to stay awake. I remember that my son was reading the sale ads and mentioned that there were cool animals for sale in this week's addition of the local paper. I think I dosed off as he was talking. I remember getting up from the chair and saying that I needed to go to bed. He asked me something else and I know I mumbled a reply. The next day when I got home from work my husband and all three kids were out by the garden shed. I could see that they were looking into a large cage. I parked the car and walked towards them. In the cage were three ferrets. Our son was explaining to his father that I had told him he could get them. My sons said he had asked me last night while I was watching television and I had said yes. I explained to him that I was half asleep and that I would never have agreed to add three ferrets to the family if I had been awake. That night the children had to develop their own animals for sale ad for the paper.
