It's hard to breathe. Your chest feels heavy, like something is sitting on it. You can hear your own heartbeat. Your palms are sweaty. It's difficult to think straight. The room seems to be spinning. These are all symptoms of a panic attack; and if you suffer from them, you are not alone.

People who experience anxiety attacks can feel isolated and embarrassed by their reactions to everyday situations. Panic attacks don't make sense, so people who experience them can have feelings of inferiority. In order to ask for the much-needed help, a person will have to get past the embarrassment. Some people may require prescription medication. Many have also learned about anxiety self help techniques.

It's important to realize that panic attacks are often caused by your body's "fight or flight" response. Your mind and nervous system tricks itself into believing a threat exists. It finds a stimulus in the environment and perceives it as a threat, even if logically you know it is harmless. Overcoming anxiety can often be achieved by recognizing what you are experiencing.

A great anxiety self help tools is a type of self hypnosis. If a panic attack hits, you should inhale as deeply as possible. Then exhale and repeat multiple times. Try counting backwards from 10 or 20 while deeply breathing and exhaling. Also try to relax your muscles, starting at the feet and then moving up your body.

When you want to overcome an attack, some people use visualization. When people use this option they have a safe place in their mind that they go to. It could be a place from childhood, or it could be a room in your own home, such as your living room or kitchen. When people that experience these kind of attacks feel one comming on, they will imagine themselves in their safe place where they feel relaxed and confident.

If these anxiety self help techniques aren't helping, you should probably do some more investigating. There are many books and websites that are exclusively for people who suffer from panic attacks. Don't continue to be a casualty of panic attacks. A little work on your part can give you great results.

Finding out how to stop panic attacks can help you to feel more relaxed in your everyday life. You will no longer fear going out in public because you will know how to control your body's panic reaction. You might still have panic attacks, but with the confidence that you know how to control them and will not be overwhelmed by them.
