If you are an artist, you will want to set off your masterpiece with a beautiful frame. Custom picture frames make a perfect choice that will complement the artwork within the frame to perfection. You can choose from photography frames including the popular metal picture frames, as well as a large variety of wood frames. In addition to a beautiful frame, you will also need art framing supplies such as a mountboard, mat, glazing and your choice of photo corners or archival hinging tissues.

Custom picture frames make a great choice for digital photograph art, because you can get frames in exactly the right size for custom-sized photographs. This is simply not possible with ready-made photography frames that only come in certain sizes which may or may not be suitable for your specific work of art.

Photographs are typically framed in metal picture frames. Black is usually the preferred color of the metal, and a very slender frame is selected, both of which in order to not detract in any way from the photograph within the frame. Paintings and other types of art often utilize custom picture frames made from wood. Different colors of wood, along with a variety of mat colors, can be selected to complement or contrast the colors used in the piece of art to great effect.

Before you place the art in a frame, it needs to be mounted. You can mount the art permanently by using any number of adhesives, but then it is very difficult to remove the mount if you wish to reframe the piece. Instead, many people choose photo framing supplies such as photo corners, tape or tissue. Photo corners work best with pictures that have a border around the edges. The photo corners are small enough to fit inside the border at the top corners, which are then hidden by the mat placed over them. Art framing supplies like hinging tissue can be used to attach the art to the mat board, or alternatively to attach the mat board to the mount board with the artwork sandwiched in between. In all cases, in order to prevent damage to the art, you want to use a method of connecting the art to the mat and mount boards that allow the artwork to expand and contract within the frame. Failure to do so may result in damage to the art. Connecting the artwork to the mat and or the mount helps to keep the art centered under the mat inside the frame.

Along with custom picture frames, you will also want to consider photo framing supplies such as glazing. While glass is resistant to scratches, acrylic removes the glare and any color variations that are common with glass. Art framing using custom picture frames and other quality supplies will show a professional touch that others will appreciate.

iStockphoto has announced their intention to sell logos and it is causing quite a stir in the design community. I guess a lot of designers think that the low price of logos on iStock demeans their profession and threatens their livelihood. There are warnings of infringement issues, calls for a boycott of iStockphoto and dire predictions of the demise of the design profession. While many iStock contributors are excited about the prospect, others are citing the necessity of the design community to band together to stop offering their work so cheaply, and of educating the young designers on the necessity of stopping the race to the bottom.
