Are you making daily backups of your WordPress blog(s) on a regular basis? If you're not, you might want to start. Someday you'll be glad you've taken this simple preventive measure. I learned the hard way about backing up hard drives and I just learned WordPress blogs work the same way.

Recently I invested several hours in updating a few of my blogs. I normally make a weeks worth of posts and set them to run on autopilot so I don't physically have to make a post every day. To my surprise all the posts and other tweaks I had made had vanished the next day. I contacted my host but it's like one of those unsolved mysteries. Nobody can explain what happened. Ultimately I ended up repeating what I had already done and wasting a few hours of my date. It was not pleasant.

If this has happened to you yet, don't get smug. Crashes happen to everyone eventually. You're playing with fire if you're not making regular backups. The question is "when", not "if". Quickly navigating to my search engine of choice, I typed in the search term "back up wordpress blog" and there it was - a wordpress plug-in that does automatic backups of your database. You can set it to run daily, weekly, or monthly depending on your preferences and the backup will be conveniently delivered to your inbox.

The whole process is extremely simple to set up. In less than 5 minutes I had the plug-in installed and daily backup set up to be done automatically. Now I can rest easy that when the day comes that some of my data has mysteriously disappeared I'll have a back up that will save me from repeating the frustrating experience I just endured.

I've posted the instructions on my blog or you can search for the title of the post which is "Daily Backups for WordPress with GMail."
