If you are looking for a business credit card then there are a number of things that you will need to take into consideration in order to make an informed decision. As with all financial service products, there are a vast number of business credit cards available so you will need to find a way to narrow down your search to a manageable number of cards. The first thing that you need to do in order to compare business credit cards is to take a look at your company itself. For example, what are the things you commonly purchase? How many people are eligible to make purchases on your company’s behalf? Have there been accidents or thefts in the past? All of this data will be helpful as various cards offer different services appealing to different market sectors and business types.

There are a number of things that you will need to know about each card in order to make an initial selection. Firstly you should check the card’s typical APR as this will affect you for the life of the card; this is perhaps the single most important consideration. Next you will want to know if there is an annual fee for using the card; usually there isn't but some cards on the market do make charges of up to £100 per annum. You will then want to know if there any unique extras provided that may be invaluable to your company. Finally you will want to know if there are any introductory offers such as 0% balance transfers and 0% purchases for a period after application.

Luckily to compare business credit cards you can always visit a financial comparison site. There are many online, some of which are hosted by TV celebrity financial consultants or consultants who write for the major newspapers. These comparison sites will list all of the details that you need to know including those listed above.

A brief glance on virtually any comparison site will tell you that the present offers look something like this. The typical APRs on offer range from 14.9% to 17.9% with the market standard being 15.9%. However, don't be so quick to rule out the higher APRs, as these cards tend to offer extra unique benefits in order to offset the higher interest rate. Most cards available don't have annual fees but a small number do but, once again, these fee charging companies often offer unique services above and beyond the other card companies. Introductory offers usually include a 3-month 0% on purchases and a year’s free balance transfers. However, despite the free balance transfers rate there is now normally a transfer fee of, on average, 2.5%.

It is in the extra services that you will find the most diversity and that could be crucial to your company’s needs so to compare business credit cards you will need to look at these carefully. Some cards, for example, are aimed at businesses that have frequent travel needs. These cards may offer free Air Miles and worldwide travel insurance. Some even provide discount on petrol purchases from preferred suppliers determined by the card company. Other companies provide discount on telephone bills with specific telecommunication companies or money off stationary purchases. Still others focus on security issues providing insurance on purchases, anti-fraud insurance and so on.

Once you have narrowed your search down to a handful of cards then you will be able to make a decision. Often it is the special extras that are going to be the factor that helps make up your mind, as these can potentially provide huge savings throughout the year. However, other things to look at will be online banking and reporting services as these can save your company a lot of time and thus reduce administration requirements and costs. Also these facilities can help with end of year reporting and in the keeping of audit trails. Finally it is a good idea to look at the card provider’s official website because, although biased, you will be able to find the 'Terms and Conditions' applicable to each card and read through the 'small print'. Hopefully all of this combined will help you to compare business credit cards and come to a more informed decision in which to apply for.
