1. Not all the herpes blood tests are same. They are different in their accuracy results and approach. Different tests are administered according to the condition of the patient.

2. Herpes blood tests are used to diagnose the problem or whether the disease is present in the blood or not. These tests help in prognosis to large extent.

3. A herpes blood test is usually considered as an antibody (protein which react to contagious agents) test. When immune system comes in contact with herpes simplex virus (HSV), these antibodies come into existence. Herpes blood test diagnoses these viruses in the body.

4. All the herpes blood tests do not provide you the accurate results. There are types which cannot even distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2. However, with the up going advancement, new improved tests are available with better accuracy rate. Always go for the best.

Types of the Herpes Blood Tests

HerpeSelect HSV-1 and HSV-2 ELISA

This test is performed in some particular laboratories. Usually the results are provided within a day. This test is largely supported by the number of physicians across the globe for its accuracy and authenticity. Focus Technologies (Cypress, CA) is located in USA and makes and sells herpes blood test kit in USA and many countries abroad. Recombinant gG-1 and gG-2 kit is used in HerpSselect HSV-1 and HSV-2 ELISA.

HerpeSelect Immunoblot

Rather expensive than the Elisa test, it is effective for both HSV-1 and HSV-2. This test is administered in most of the renowned and well equipped laboratories. This herpeSelect immunobolt test kit is made by Focus Technologies and contains the same gG-1 and gG-2 recombinant kit as found in ELISA test kits.

Western blot

Western blot is very authentic and accurate. However, it is more expensive than other herpes blood test and also it takes more time. In western blot test the serum is administered to check for the presence of antibodies in the blood. This test is the trademark of University of Washington.

Biokit HSV-2

Biokit HSV-2 is a new name for the test available in the market as "POCkitâ„¢ HSV-2" in the past. This is the product of Biokit USA. It is also available with the brand name of "SureVue" by Fisher Scientific. This test is very easy to perform and very quick to disclose the results.


Some of the limitations of herpes blood test are given below:

1. Herpes blood test only diagnoses the presence of virus, i.e. whether you are infected or not. This test will not detect the virus itself.

2. Also this test is a general test and will not inform you about the location of the viral infected area.

3. This test only tells you the result for your present statistics. It will not provide any probability about the virus growth in near future.
