It is said by some that the ideal gift reflects the personality of the giver – and what is more personal than a personalized photo gift using custom picture frames? Ready made frames are a less expensive alternative, but whether you choose these or custom picture frames, you'll need the right materials as well as skill and patience.

The Basics

A photo gift is only as good as the picture framing supplies that are used; the best photograph done by a professional photographer with state-of-the art equipment will look only as good as its setting – which is an excellent reason for using custom picture frames if your budget allows it. There are of course many excellent ready made frames available, but the custom option means you have more control over the final product – whereas with ready made frames, you are limited in your choices.

A successful framing project begins with mat board. This material is what provides the backing for your photograph and prevents it from curling up. You attach your photo to the mat board with the use of self-adhesive photo corners. These are your most basic picture framing supplies, and you do not want to skimp here. If you are on a limited budget, it makes sense to purchase the best quality mat board and photo corners you can find.

Onward and Upward

The next step is to apply another piece of matting material on top of the photograph. The purpose here is twofold: it provides a neat border for the photo itself, and more importantly, it keeps the surface of your photo from coming into actual physical contact with the glazing material, which could damage the image.

It is vital that you use picture framing supplies that are acid-free, because this is what causes photographic images to become yellow and brittle with age. The best quality mat board is impregnated with an alkaline barrier that will neutralize any acidic compounds in the environment.

Finishing Up

For glazing, you can use glass (which is the best choice); alternatively, you can use clear plastic or acrylic, though these are less desirable. Glass works best when it comes to protecting your photo from environmental contaminants and direct sunlight which can cause the image to fade.

Next, insert everything into one of your custom picture frames or ready made frames. That's it – you're done! Just make sure your prefabricated or custom picture frames aren't gaudy and detract from the photo images – quiet and understated design is usually the best choice.

At the User Generated Content Expo there was one common theme that kept coming through no matter who the speaker was. That theme was that quality content is key to success. I believe this is an especially important point for stock photographers. Further, that is true whether you are shooting for Rights Managed, Royalty Free or Microstock.
As in the words of Andreas Feininger, an eminent American photographer, a photographer is like an artist who has the power to control the subject matter of his photography. He has the ability to control space, form, light, texture, speed, etc. The only one thing, on which he doesn't have control, is the 'composition'.
This comes in a wide variety of types of wood, as well as colorations available through stains and paints, so there is more potential for adding a colorful addition to your artwork with this option. Wood picture frame moulding also blends in well with casual home decor, unlike metal frames, which may appear a little modern in country or rustic types of interior design styles.
Because of the standard sizes and price difference, you will often see metal ready made picture frames used in art galleries and showrooms, because the standardized look also makes it more restful to the eye when used in a room full of artwork.
Artists use bubble pouches in several different ways. Transportation is a big reason for their use. Artists need to bring samples of their fine art photography or paintings in to a gallery owner in order to set up a showing at the gallery. For this reason, artists use bubble wrap pouches to protect the surface of their artwork during transportation.
Framed artwork can be kept safe by placing it inside a gallery pouch. Additional protection is available when you use picture frame protectors. Picture frame protectors are little cardboard corners that fit over each corner of your frame, giving additional protection from nicks and scrapes. When used with bubble pouches, they offer exceptional protection from damage.
When you sell your artwork, in many instances you will need to mail it to the new owner. This means that you have to find a way to ship your artwork so that it arrives in mint condition, and this is when bubble pouches are handy. This type of art protector comes with your choice of opening on the side or top, making it easier to insert the artwork into the pouch. The air bubbles between two sheets of heavy plastic making up the gallery pouch help ensure that the artwork arrives in excellent condition, even if the package is handled somewhat roughly.
