Drug rehabilitation is a two-tiered program that aims to cure both physical and psychological dependency; drug rehab therapy is designed in the same manner. A drug rehab therapy program addresses physical dependency by starting the detoxification process to combat withdrawal difficulties. On the other hand, another aspect of therapy focuses on the psychological dependency to drugs and employs certain coping strategies based on psychological principles.

Pharmacotherapy is one type of therapy that is important in a drug rehabilitation program. It uses medications such as buprenorphine and methadone to tone down one's drug dependency. These medications stabilize the patient's opioid system and thus are effective in reducing drug and substance dependence.

Detoxification, meanwhile, is a process of ridding the body of its toxins and poisons. It holds to the principle that before any other type of rehabilitation is ensued, one must first get an understanding of his physical condition and cleanse his body to prepare it for other rehabilitation therapies. In this case, a health professional's opinion is vital. The doctor first consults with the patient to find the detoxification program that is best suited to the patient.

Detoxification is also connected with treating chemical imbalances in the patient's body. You see, drug addiction is believed to cause a chemical imbalance in the body. Therefore, a biochemical restoration is necessary. It has been discovered that the way a patient copes with the chemical imbalances in his body is crucial to his recovery. Along with detoxification, one must improve his diet (which includes taking in nutritional supplements) and live a healthy lifestyle.

Another treatment type is psychotherapy, although this has been given less attention that pharmacotherapy. Psychotherapy is a common element in most drug rehabilitation programs. It involves counseling and a continuous evaluation of the patient's improvement. However, studies have yet to conclusively identify the best form of psychotherapy for drug abuse related cases.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) delves into a specific problematic behavior shown in the past week or few days. The counselor views the behavior in detail and studies what happened that led to the present circumstances or behavior. By analyzing these events and the patient's reactions to it, the therapist can then guide the patient in formulating ways to cope with the situation rather that using drugs as a way to evade the issues involved.

This therapy processes at-issue behaviors in a descending manner such that highly-crucial behaviors, issues, or concerns are first dealt with until the therapy reaches the least important concern of the patient.

Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) is focused more on parents and family members of the patient. It has been discovered that negative reactions towards a teenager's drug addiction further pushes the child into continuing with the addiction. BSFT opens discussions with the parents and family members to help them use positive interaction to help the child deal with his problem and eventually recover from it.

It was noted that improving family ties can easily and speedily restore healing and recovery. Psychologists greatly rely on how positively family members can deal and interact with the patient as it greatly reduces the latters drug dependence and problematic behaviors.
