When you think about animals in the Smoky Mountains, the ever-popular black bear probably comes to mind first. Since the Smokies are home to over 10,000 species of animals, seeing deer, fish and birds in this area is not a surprise. On the other hand, finding zebras or crocodiles in this neck of the woods would be a bit of a shock. Believe it or not, animals such as camels, llamas and monkeys are alive and well in the mountains of Tennessee. Just a short drive from the Smoky Mountain National Park is a variety of exotic animals awaiting your visit.

The Circle G Ranch in Straw Plains, Tennessee, is one place you'll find critters that wouldn’t normally call the Smokies home. Ever ridden a camel? You can at Circle G. Less than 30 minutes from the Smoky Mountains you’ll find camels wandering through 62 acres of wilderness. Ready to climb aboard? Experienced guides will take you on an unforgettable one-hour camel safari.

Maybe you prefer to see the animals from a distance. If that’s the case, the Drive Thru Zoo is for you. Putter along the paths as ostriches, zebras and llamas curiously walk right over to your car. Whether up-close or from the comfort of your vehicle, you'll be amazed at these incredible creatures.

A Rainforest in Tennessee

Take a trip to the rainforest when you visit Sevierville, Tennessee. There you’ll find Rainforest Adventure Discovery Zoo featuring over 400 lives animals. Stop for a visit with lemurs and porcupines or capture some photos of the powerful African serval, a cousin of the cheetah. If you’re a bird lover, the cockatoos and macaws will absolutely enchant you. There's plenty to entice reptile fans, too, including an interesting collection of snakes, lizards, tortoises and crocodiles.

Ready to take to the outback? Head off for an Aussie Walkabout. New to the Discovery Zoo, the Walkabout has 17,000 square feet that kangaroos and wallabies call home. There’s also a sheep station and bird aviary for your enjoyment.

Zebras and Monkeys and Reindeer, Oh My!

The Deer Farm Exotic Petting Zoo is another animal lover’s delight located in Sevierville, Tennessee on 143 acres. Adults will enjoy horse rides on guided trails, while pony rides will keep the little ones entertained. The petting zoo gives you an opportunity to experience unique animals including reindeer, exotic cattle, zebras, monkeys, camels and more.

No matter what kinds of animals you like, you’ll find them in the Smoky Mountains. Visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to view the area's best-loved bears, deer, fish and foul. Then head out for a short drive to discover exotic animals from faraway places. Experiencing such a variety of creatures is an educational and enjoyable experience for the whole family.
