Fashion in India is not a prerogative of the rich and elite anymore. Styles and trends have trickled down from fashion boutiques to dingy shops that line the street. Fashion Street at VT was one the first of its kind where you could get fashionable for a negligent amount. Now there are lines of shops that sport the latest in fashion from Colaba to Borivali.

So it all depends on how much is the itch to spend. Malls sport a higher end in fashion with prices that range from a minimum of Rs. 500 to a maximum of Rs. 3000 and more. And of course we have the designer’s pad that display the latest for the individual taste.

Gone are the days when Indian fashion was local with the traditional flavour to it. Today it has everything to put it on the international ramp. And it is there. Ritu Kumar was the first Indian to take the Indian couture on an international podium with her fashion show in Italy. Soon many followed.

The impetus to high street fashion has also been the underlying current of the rising importance of couture in Bollywood and the film industry across India. Citizens of the country being glued to every movie that releases and following closely the styles and trends of their favourite heroes and heroines, puts focus on being best dressed in the industry. Hence designers with grand signature lines are welcomed to work on the entire entourage of clothes for all stars on board a film.

Some names to reckon with in the movie fashion industry include Manish Malhotra, Neeta Lulla, Manish Aggarwal, Rohit Bal, Rocky S, and the list goes on. The recently released Fashion movie had style galore from around the world and Priyanka Chopra was privy to don attires by Italian designers. But more and more modern movies are catering to the younger crowd and hence designs and patterns are young and elaborate. And this is just the beginning for the fashion industry in India.
