To find the right fencing shoes, one must consider the qualities most important for fencing success. All fencers do not require the same shoe attributes; each person will have a different need based on the structure of their feet. The cost of the shoe will also be a determining purchase factor.

Shoes worn for fencing should be light weight, with flat rubber soles for good balance and traction. Many are lined with suede or other soft fabrics for keeping traction inside the shoes as well. The suede or other materials also help keep wear on the inside of the shoes to a minimum as the lunging that takes place while fencing would wear through street shoes very quickly.

Fencing shoes can come in a high top variety or a low top variety. Choosing between these is almost solely personal choice. While many fencers prefer the freedom of the low top shoes, some prefer the support of the ankles in the high top shoes.

Most experts agree that the fencing shoes you buy should be lightweight to give the fencer more freedom when moving about the floor. However, it seems that some fencers believe that it builds muscle tone to wear a slightly heavier shoe. Some even train in heavier shoes and switch to lightweight shoes for matches.

In some stores you will be able to find fencing shoes in the $60-$80 range, which is fairly inexpensive. However, if you are looking long lasting shoes, with good support, these can run as much as $200 at a fencing supply store. Fencing supplies can be found in some sporting goods stores, but the best selection is available online.

Many fencers have turned to buying boxing shoes and making only minor adjustments in order to give them the same qualities of shoes for fencing. Boxing shoes are lighter and usually less expensive than fencing shoes. You will probably need to add gel insoles to soften the impact on your feet and joints, as well as heel cups if you develop or have had problems in the past with shin splints.
