All states in the US have their own rules and regulations concerning auto insurance and Florida is no exception.

If you register a vehicle in Florida, then auto insurance is mandatory. The minimum requirements are $10,000 coverage for property damage liability and a further $10,000 coverage for personal injury protection. These amounts can of course be increased with a corresponding rise in premiums. Even if your vehicle is kept off the road for an extended period you must have a Florida policy unless you surrender your Florida registration.

In addition your insurance policy must be delivered by an insurance company or agent licensed by the Florida Department of Insurance.

Even if you live outside of Florida, if you use a vehicle in Florida for more than 90 days within a year then you must have a Florida insurance policy. If you move to Florida on a permanent basis then you have to have a Florida policy. The policy you hold that was issued in the state you are moving from cannot be transferred. This is normally not a problem as most reputable insurance companies operate country wide and can therefore issue a Florida policy

Property damage liability coverage is designed to pay for any damage to other people's property caused by you or a member of your family.

Likewise, personal injury protection pays for injuries to other people as a result of an accident caused by either you or a member of your family. Vehicles used for public transport (such as taxis) must carry Bodily Injury Liability coverage of $125,000 per person, $250,000 per occurrence and $50,000 for property damage liability coverage.

These are the minimum requirements in Florida and, to be honest, not very realistic in today's world. Many insurance advisors would suggest that these figures are doubled and coverage extended to pay for your legal costs should you be sued.
