Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a painful or burning feeling in the upper abdomen and is usually accompanied by nausea, bloating or gas, a feeling of fullness, and, sometimes, vomiting. While indigestion may be the result of a disease or an ulcer in the digestive tract, most often it is the result of eating too much, eating too quickly, eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations.

Indigestion might be caused by a disease or ulcer in the digestive tract. However, for many people, indigestion is caused by eating too much, eating too quickly, being tired, drinking too much caffeinated beverages, eating high-fat foods, or eating during stressful situations.

Avoiding foods and situations that can cause indigestion is one of the most successful ways to treat the problem. While many persons feel antacids may help, indigestion is not the result of stomach acid, so these are not an appropriate treatment. Smokers may be advised to quit smoking or avoid smoking before meals. Also, exercising after a meal can be a cause of indigestion, so scheduling exercise before a meal, or waiting at least an hour after eating, can also help prevent indigestion.

Advise patients to eat frequent, small meals. Also, tell them to avoid foods known to cause symptoms as well as coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol, and tobacco. Explain all diagnostic tests and procedures. Discuss other ways to deal with stress, such as deep breathing and guided imagery. Provide the patient with a calm environment to reduce stress, and make sure the patient gets plenty of rest. In addition, prepare the patient for endoscopy to evaluate the cause of dyspepsia.

After doing Kunjala, empty stomach in the morning Udar Shakti Vikasaka Exercises should be practiced. Surya Namaskar, Tadasana, Katichakrasana, Pada- Hastasana, pavanmuktasana, Bhujangasana, Dhanurasana, Vajrasana, Mandukasana, Mayurasana, Ardhamatsyendrasana and Suryabhedana Pranayama are especially beneficial in this disease. The practice of Agnisara acts as panecea for the patients of Indigestion. Such patients should change their daily routine and try to keep their minds peaceful and happy. They should not drink water immediately after meals but take it one hour after meal.

Antacids - These neutralise acid, or help to stop the stomach contents flowing back (refluxing) into the oesophagus. They come as tablets, capsules, liquids or powders. Examples of antacid brands include Rennies and Gaviscon. Some antacids contain an ingredient called an alginate which forms a barrier that floats on the top of the stomach contents to prevent them splashing back up into the oesophagus, preventing heartburn and reflux symptoms. Others contain magnesium or aluminium.

Medications: A range of indigestion treatments can be bought from the pharmacy without a prescription. Patients with the esophagitis type of indigestion are often treated with H2 antagonists. H2 antagonists are drugs that block the secretion of stomach acid. They include ranitidine (Zantac) and famotidine (Pepcid). Patients with motility disorders may be given prokinetic drugs. Prokinetic medications speed up the emptying of the stomach and increase intestinal motility. They include metoclopramide (Reglan) and cisapride (Propulsid). These drugs relieve symptoms in 60-80% of patients.
