The use of herbal supplements by people may actually prove to be more dangerous to their health instead of beneficial.

Researchers believe that the first mistake that consumers make when they use herbal remedies is that they believe that the different herbal remedies that they take actually work. A lot of consumers of herbal remedies are just actually spending a lot of money on treatments that have no assurance of working and being effective.

People usually take herbal supplements to treat a particular disease instead of just using the treatment for general welfare, and a majority of those cases have never been clinically-proven to have been effective.

Aditya Bardia, an internist at the Mayo Clinic stated that it is only when the herbal supplements are not effective and harmful does it become a concern. If it is not harmful, physicians would probably not think of it as a concern.

Different supplements may cause adverse effects on a person taking them, from nausea and vomiting to life-threatening conditions. Due to this fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued warnings and banned certain herbal supplements that were suspected of having adverse effects on people.

The biggest risk from taking herbal supplements is if they were taken along with the pharmaceutical drugs that you are already taking. This can either weaken the effectiveness of the drugs that you are taking or create a new problem aside from your current sickness.

Doctors urge people who want to try herbal supplements, to ask them about it first, and to disclose to doctors whatever supplements you are taking in order for the doctor to be able to issue the right pharmaceutical drugs for your ailment.
