The stomach normally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process. This acid helps in breaking down the food during digestion. When there is excess production of acid in the stomach, it results in the condition known as acidity. Most acidity problems occur after meals, when doing some heavy exercise and applying pressure in the intra-abdominal region or at night when lying down. Acidity refers to a set of symptoms caused by an imbalance between the acid secreting mechanism of the stomach and proximal intestine and the protective mechanisms that ensure their safety. There are certain types of ulcers where acid secretion is either normal or even low. Acidity is responsible for symptoms like dyspepsia, heartburn and the formation of ulcers. It is also more common in the developed and industrialised nations, though a recent increase in incidence has also occurred in the developing countries. A peptic ulcer is a raw area in the lining of the upper part of the small intestine or the stomach, whose protective mucosal lining has been eroded away by the gastric juices. Duodenal ulcers are three times more common than gastric ulcers.

Acidity is more common in highly emotional and nervous individuals. In case of severe gastric ulcer, pain may get aggravated on intake of food and relieved after vomiting. Dyspepsia and heartburn are often the main symptoms of acidity. Heartburn is characterised by a deeply placed, burning pain in the chest behind the sternum. Peptic ulcer disease can sometimes occur without symptoms. Acid production in patients with duodenal ulcers tends to be higher than normal, while in those with stomach or gastric ulcers, it is usually normal or lower. Pepsin is an enzyme that breaks down proteins. Pepsin and hydrochloric acid cause damage to the stomach or duodenum if the stomach's protective system is altered or damaged. Lack of adequate blood flow to the stomach contributes to ulcers. Symptoms may also arise when there is no ulcer present, which is known as non-ulcer dyspepsia. A suitable diet must be strictly followed avoiding spicy, salty and acidic foods. Smoking and alcohol consumption must be stopped.

Problems in the digestive system should not be neglected. There are different possible digestive system disorders or diseases that are most often neglected by many people. The most common digestive problem is the acid reflux or gastro-esophageal reflux disease, mostly known as heartburn. Acid reflux affects different ages from infants to young children and adults as well. This disorder should be given special attention because it can lead to a more serious problem that could affect the respiratory system.
Many people get hungry because they lack food. Children become malnourished if they are not given the right amount of food which contains the needed vitamins and minerals which in turn make the body strong and healthy. The fact is, not all foods are healthy. The most popular unhealthy food is 'junk foods'. Just as the word suggests, junk, which means it is like garbage. But many people are still patronizing these kinds of food.
People suffering from the heartburn need proper treatment. Despite of regular treatment, if symptoms are so sever than it require immediate relief. There are various drugs are available for the instant relief. The immediate drugs are available in the OTC market or from drug stores. It is important for you to get the antacids drugs on regular bases.
General symptoms of GERD are heartburn, regurgitation and nausea. Heartburn is a burning sensation in the middle of the chest caused due to nerve stimulation resulting from acid reflux into the esophagus. Regurgitation is caused due to appearance of small quantities of liquid in the mouth resulting from reflux of liquid and/or food after passing through upper esophageal sphincter (UES) at the upper end of esophagus. The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) is a circular ring of muscles similar in action to LES (2).
The symptoms of acid reflux disease are as follows: heartburn, which is characterized by chest pain; inflammation in the mucosa; difficulty in swallowing; cough and hoarseness. These symptoms are felt by the infected person after eating a fatty meal or drinking liquor, when bending, and worse when constantly smoking.
Acidity and heartburn are due to occurrence of too a lot acid in the stomach that causes irritation of the gastrointestinal casing. This causes a burning soreness. When this too much acid leaks back into the throat this inflames and the reaction of heartburn is created.
Acid reflux is commonly called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. It is the spilling of the stomach contents, (food, acid, pepsin, bile acids, and pancreatic enzymes) into the esophagus. A small amount of spilling of stomach contents happens in all individuals, especially after meals. Only when symptoms and complications occur is it considered a problem.
