How Reliable are Home Pregnancy Tests?

So perhaps you've missed a period and are feeling a little run down. Maybe your breasts have even become tender. You go to the drugstore for a home pregnancy test - just how reliable are they?

There are two things to be concerned about with home pregnancy tests. 1. false positives and 2. false negatives.

False positives would be if the pregnancy test tells you that you are pregnant, but you really aren't. With most home pregnancy tests, false positives are extremely rare, in fact, almost non-existent. Chances are if the test reads positive - you are pregnant.

Exceptions happen if you have been taking certain hormones, or have recently been pregnant and there are still hormones in your system. Either way, a positive test is worth a call to the doctor.

False negatives are a little more common. They happen when there isn't enough of the pregnancy hormone in your system yet to cause the test to react positively. Each type of pregnancy test has a different threshold - some are more sensitive than others.

If you think you have a false negative, check the packaging for the pregnancy test you took and try a different one that's more sensitive. You can always call your doctor who can provide a blood test that will be extremely accurate.

It is always a good idea, if you think you are pregnant, to call your doctor.

Almost every woman is blessed with the capacity to bear a child at least once in her lifetime. It is considered to be one of the greatest gifts that a woman can give her husband. This is not a scam. You can get pregnant easier and faster even if you are over the age of 40. Here is the secret: reduce your exposure to cigarette smoke! That is all there is to it. The journal "Fertility and Sterility" has a published study where doctors found that men who stopped smoking showed a rise in sperm count of up to 800 percent. According to Margareta D. Pisarska, MD, co-director of Center for Reproductive Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and editor-in-chief of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine News, smokers undergoing fertility treatments usually require much higher doses of fertility medication than nonsmokers.
If you are a woman over the age of 40 and is trying to get pregnant, there is no reason why you cannot conceive. There are many treatment options out there for you to research and weigh the benefits and drawbacks so that you can decide what's best for you. Basal body temperature (BBT) is your temperature at rest when you first wake up in the morning. This temperature rises just slightly when you are ovulating so by keeping track of your body's BBT, you can estimate when you are most fertile.
If you're in your late 30s or in your 40s and you're considering getting pregnant, it is statistically shown that you are more financially secure to support a child and give her a stable and nurturing environment. Before you delve into this life-changing decision, you must be aware of all of the risks involved.
Pregnancies inherently have risks but especially for women who are over the age of 40. Down syndrome, preeclampsia, high blood pressure, and diabetes, are just a few of the issues facing older pregnant women. Despite these risks, women should enjoy being pregnant and be comforted in the knowledge that studies do find that older mothers provide a more stable, nurturing environment and their children grow to be successful professionals.
