To enhance the internal link structure of your website, it is first important to understand the definition of "Link Weight." New studies have shown that on page factors are not very important in determining the search engine rankings of your website. Search engines are more concerned with how your site is promoted by other websites. Link weight is different from page rank, and the two terms should never be confused. Page rank deals with pages, while Link Weight deals with links. It is important to make sure that every page on your site is indexed without using a lot of internal links.

To give you an example of the difference between the two, imagine that your website has received two PR8 links from two different sites. One one site, your link is on a page with only two other links. On the other site, your link is on a page with 200 links. Even though the page rank of both sites are equal, the page with the least number of links will carry a much higher Link Weight. When you hear people talk about links, they are generally talking about links which come from other sites. If you go to websites which are well optimized, you will find that few place an emphasis on the internal link structure.

The reason for this is because these webmasters fear that their page rank will be reduced by linking to other websites from their homepage. At the same time, they are wasting at lot of link weight on pages which are not that important. By using the link weight on your index page, it can be transferred over to weaker pages which are competing for specific keywords. The first thing you should do is analyze the the keywords on each page of your site, and look at the conversion rates for those words. You will also want to look at the competition these keywords have in the search engines. After this, you will want to transfer the link weight the pages which are the weakest, while leaving some link weight on pages which can easily give it out.
