Moving is never easy. Aside from the physical toll, relocating will hurt your finances, most of the time badly. Moving will cost you, but it does not need to cost you big. With a little effort, planning, and creativity, you can save yourself a few hundred dollars on your next move.

The first thing to remember is you must be prepared to do leg work. It will be hard but if you are on a very tight budget it will be worth it. Here are a couple of useful tips to get you on track on cutting back your moving expenses. (Please note that this is written assuming you will hire a professional mover and not move by yourself.)

Research. Get yourself online and search for moving companies and moving deals. There are a lot of websites offering free estimates or quote. Be careful and wary, though. You are looking for a cheap moving deal, not a cheap moving company. It is also good to check for the official website of the moving company that you are interested in.

Time to call your best buddies. Friends are a good thing to have during these kinds of situations. Have them come over to give you a helping hand and do not forget to tell them that they will not get paid. You are sure to find a couple willing to help just for laughs and company.

Buy in bulk. Almost all moving supplies are available online. And most of them give discounts if you buy in bulk and in advance. A few items to consider purchasing are moving boxes (different sizes), bubble wraps, packing tape, and moving blankets.

Be creative. Household items can replace most moving supplies. Use your own blankets instead or find some old newspapers to replace bubble wraps. Be resourceful and you will find yourself packed with savings.

Pack yourself. Small items are a breeze to pack. Larger items may require some special attention, so take care on this task. Also, you might want to check with your mover if this will affect your moving insurance.

Pack or sell? Do you really need that paint-stained table with a broken leg? What about those old magazines? What about those plants? Think carefully on what is worth bringing along and what is not. Sometimes it would be better to just give away or sell stuff that is not that important. Better yet, donate them to your local charity.

Inquire and investigate. Do not be shy to ask your moving company about financial specifics of your move. What materials will they use? Can they use cheaper packing tapes and/or boxes? What are your other options? Also, try your best to bargain. It almost always works.

Get disconnected. Call your phone, electric, gas, water, and other utility companies to have your service disconnected. Let them know that you will be moving and will not be requiring their services on your address. It will save you some money if you do this right and on time.
