When a plumbing problem comes on quickly and you need to find a plumber fast, what's the best way to choose one? A good plumber is often hard to find so many people just choose the first one that's available. The dangers of this are that the job may be to a poor standard, you may have been overpriced and there may be no guarantee. Whether it's changing taps, fitting a shower or installing a central heating system, it's helpful to have a checklist handy to rate a plumber so that you can make the right choice.

Word of Mouth

Reputation is everything when choosing tradesmen. A good reference from family and friends is without doubt the most reliable way of choosing a plumber. You need to know whether he is reliable, honest and competent enough to do the job. If nobody you know or trust knows of a good plumber, ask a few plumbers for references or testimonials. The more reputable, trustworthy and experienced plumber or firm will be happy to oblige.

Price

Even small plumbing jobs can have a hefty price attached. Price is always a tricky thing to work out as there are so many factors to consider. To make sure you're getting a fair price, contact a few plumbers and work out the average. The lowest price isn't always the best deal as it often reflects a low quality in workmanship. The highest price may also not be best either. Either the job is simply overpriced or the plumber is just too busy for your job and doesn't want to say no. It's a good idea to get a written estimate before work begins. Depending on the job, some plumbers will put a call out charge on the price, or charge an hourly rate. Always ask for an estimate first as the job may only take 5 minutes but you may be charged for a full hour's work.

Experience

Check whether your plumber is trained for the job in hand. Experience is also reflected in the price so find out how long your plumber has been in the business, what jobs he has done in the past and what he is trained to do. In the UK, ensure that for bigger jobs such as central heating or indeed any gas work your plumber is Corgi registered. This is not only for issues of safety such as carbon monoxide poisoning, it is a legal requirement. Also for larger jobs ensure that he is well qualified. A Corgi registered plumber will be up to date with plumbing methods and training and use the correct equipment.

Guarantee

A good guarantee gives you peace of mind that you won't have the chore of looking for another plumber or pay for the job to be done all over again. Some independent plumbers and one or two man companies guarantee their work for 30 to 90 days. Larger operations will offer guarantees from 1 to 5 years depending on the nature of the job, and will sometimes be a parts and labour guarantee.

Plumbing is one of the most important parts of your home so you need any plumbing work to be carried out efficiently and on time by a trained and experienced professional.
