Should You Treat Panic Attacks With Self-Care Or Only a Doctor's Care

Although frightening, panic attacks are fairly common amongst many people. If they are frequent and become severe, it is a much bigger issue and you need to address it properly. Regardless, you may wonder whether it is best to cure panic attacks on your own or with the help of a doctor!

It really depends on the severity of the attack and whether it is a physical attack or a strictly emotional attack. If you have been previously diagnosed with a medical illness like heart disease, home treatment is definitely not the way to go. But if it is something you experience from time to time probably due to stress, there are methods you can pursue to alleviate panic attacks on your own.

Typically, you want to see a doctor the first time you have a panic attack so you can become familiar with the symptoms and signs. This way, if you experience one in the future, you can work to stop it before it gets too bad. If you are familiar with the various signs and have been diagnosed with panic attacks, there are some things you can do to stop an attack.

The first thing you want to do is relax your shoulders and become conscious of any tension you may have. Next, progressively work to tighten and relax all of your muscles throughout the body. It is vital you slow down your breathing by blowing out every breath. Lastly, tell yourself that you are going to be fine and you are not crazy. Remember, if you can talk that means you are capable of breathing.

Generally, to cure panic attacks from home you need to work on reassurance and relaxation techniques. Attacks usually last no longer than one hour, which is how long it may take for you to calm down enough to get to the doctor's office. Despite this, it is important you get to a doctor if you have a history of panic attacks.

A doctor will be able to prescribe you with various medications that you can take at the office job, and in the future if you have other attacks. There are several medications that may be prescribed depending on the condition of the person. If there is a concern of the heart, aspirin may be recommended. Otherwise, drugs like Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil and Luvox may be prescribed.

If you have just experienced your first panic attack, it is recommended you see a doctor to get checked out. From there, the doctor will be able to let you know if you can get through future panic attacks on your own. If nothing else, at least you may receive a prescription to help calm you down the next time another one occurs.
