How to Eat Cheaply in Paris

It is easy to see why Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world. People flock here to sample the array of top-notch tourist attractions on offer, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and the Champs-Elysees. They also come to Paris just to taste its air, which is heavy with atmosphere whether you’re in the pearly Montmartre, the bustling Latin Quarter, or the risqué Pigalle district.

Given this allure, Paris has become one of the most expensive cities in the world, and those traveling on a budget would be forgiven for looking upon it with a slight sense of trepidation. That being said, traveling here need not break the bank; for example, cheap hostels in Paris offer an easy way to cut down on accommodation expenses.

Once you’ve booked your Paris hostel, the one remaining budgetary danger is eating and drinking; quite simply, restaurant-going in Paris can break even the most liberal of budgets. As a result, humble backpackers are probably best served by avoiding haute-cuisine restaurants completely, and instead trying some of the following suggestions on how to eat cheaply in Paris...

Breakfast

Breakfast in Paris is a civilized affair, normally consisting of a croissant and a coffee. Unless you chose a really classy joint, such straightforward fare shouldn’t break the bank. Still, it’s possible to save those all-important cents by standing up while consuming your breakfast, as a charge is levied for sitting at a table.

Lunch

Lunch is often the main meal in Paris, with workers taking a two-hour-or-so lunch break in the middle of the day to enjoy their food. For backpackers looking to eat cheaply in Paris, there’s one age-old institution that comes to the rescue here: the fixed price menu.

The fixed price menu will normally offer three filling courses and a bevy or two for an eminently affordable outlay. The options are much more limited than the a la carte options, but then that’s to be expected, and given the savings it offers, the fixed price menu proves more than worthwhile.

If you don’t fancy a big meal, or want to eat on the go, street vendors sell extremely tasty and inexpensive fare. The most famous are probably the crepe stands, which peddle sweet or sugary pancakes packed with your choice of fillings. Panini and crudités are another option; these are basically French variations on the sandwich, traditionally using baguettes instead of sliced bread.

Dinner

One of the best ways to eat cheaply in Paris is to make your own dinner. By booking a Paris hostel, you’ll most likely have access to kitchen and dining facilities. Pick up some cheap and tasty meat, vegetables, fruit, cheese and (of course) wine while out during the day, and head back to your hostel come nightfall to cook up a storm.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to eat out for dinner, trying a Middle Eastern joint comes highly recommended. Moroccan and Lebanese food is a real delight here, and as it’s not ‘mainstream’ Paris gastronomy, it’s also often extremely affordable. As such, Paris’s couscoussières offer an excellent and evocative cheap dining opportunity.
