Stressful events have plagued humans since the dawn of man, resulting in sleepless nights. Insomnia herbs have been a cure for just as long. Modern medicine introduced an onslaught of chemicals and sedatives to help give digital-age society its sought-after rest--as well as other addictive side effects. This madness takes us back to the insomnia herbs of yore, and we have rediscovered that herbal compounds are often still the best treatments.

Caffeine is a dependency-inducing drug. While it keeps you going on otherwise sleepy mornings, it will also keep you from being able to have some much-needed rest at night. Because of sleeplessness, you'll be lethargic again the following day, not to mention jittery and volatile. Then you'll make a mad dash for the espresso machine the first opportunity you get.

It's a vicious cycle, and it must be stopped. If you cannot cut your dependency from caffeine totally, at least try to reduce your consumption. Doing this includes stopping drinking and eating colas, chocolate, and yes, the ubiquitous Starbucks. Have some insomnia herbs instead.

Valerian root is the primary cure. It is "the safest and most effective sleep aid with no side effects," according to British scientist turned herbalist Dr. Malcolm Stuart, who says the best time for a drink would be around 8 PM. Thirty minutes before retiring, use one to two teaspoons of the dried root to make a sleep-promoting tea. Unlike sleep aids, valerian causes no heavy feeling the day after. And not like its equivalent drugs, which may induce a dependency, you will not develop a dependency on this herb.

Equivalent to valerian root in terms of its sleep-promoting effects is catnip. Not only is this herb used as a solution to insomnia, but it is also thought to ease nervousness, anxiety, and even migraines. Taking catnip is again similar to valerian--one to two teaspoons of the dried herb for one cup of boiled water and set aside to percolate for around ten minutes. Do not boil the herb along with the water as this may weaken some of its active ingredients.

Chamomile is less potent and is safe for children to take, especially when they are hyper. The usual dosage is two teaspoons of dried chamomile flower for every cup of tea.

Lavender also makes for a very soothing drink at night (three flower heads to one cup of boiling water, immersed similar to catnip), and smelling a few drops of its oil or mixing it with your bubble bath has the same relaxing effect. It can be also rubbed onto your skin during a massage and its flowers and seeds stuffed into your pillows.

In Chinese Traditional medicine, the longan fruit and sour jujube seed are both known to calm the spirit. The former is used to help insomnia, while the latter is used with stronger herbs.

While the insomnia herbs mentioned above may be consumed on their own, you may also prepare an herbal cocktail if you wish. Try blending valerian with chamomile, catnip, or some other mild herbs like hops and passionflower. Add a bit of the natural sweetener stevia for flavor if you think the taste a bit too bitter to your taste. Don't drink excessively to spare yourself from sleep-disrupting trips to the bathroom.

While there is nothing essentially wrong with using insomnia herbs, homeopathy, and aromatherapy to fall asleep, it is still best to let nature take its course and let your body to fall asleep unaided, the way it's made for. To have your body to perform optimally, a lifestyle overhaul is in order.

To prevent sleep disorders, engaging in exercise, managing stress properly, and having a healthy diet filled with fruits and vegetables is the the healthiest way to go, aside from using your favorite mixture of insomnia herbs. While we're at it, why don't we have a cup of Valerian and Chamomile mixed with mint and a hint of lemon? Cheers!
