Wide variety of myths was associated with illnesses and handicaps in olden days. Same was the case with alcoholism also. Most people were under the impression that alcoholics were possessed by the devil.

People have strange notions about addiction. But the real fact is that it has an emotional basis. It is the result of basic beliefs, traumas and related emotional involvements one has made throughout life. If that is so, the therapy formulated for drug addicts should be individualized – something which help them to have a deeper insight of themselves.

Several health problems such as chronic pancreatitis, liver disease, gastritis, cardiovascular and neurological disorders are associated with excessive consumption of alcohol. For alcohol rehabilitation the treatment program chosen should suit the specific needs of the addict, according to the varying degrees of alcohol abuse. Both long term in-patient program stretching over a period of two to six months and short term out-patient program or counseling are available to overcome addiction.

Alcohol intervention is the prime step to alcohol rehabilitation. Here awareness is created in the addict through a non critical systematic, non judgmental process. Then the body is ridden of addictive substances. Physiological and mental readjustment through meditation, yoga etc., are also part of the therapy.

Another important step involved is improving the dignity and self-worth of the person. The counseling given teaches coping strategies and tools for recovery. The addicts are also made to spend time with people who have overcome the problem, which acts as a great morale booster.

These days many non-profitable voluntary organizations are actively involved in prevention and treatment of addiction. They take care of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual areas of the addict. Expert assistance from doctors, psychologists, social workers as well as those who have recovered from addiction makes the treatment speedy and effective.

Here the treatment includes methods to handle withdrawal symptoms and other health problems caused due to addiction. The psychological therapy helps the patient understand the nature of the disease of addiction and the need to make life style changes which is indispensable. Family is also involved in the program so that they remain co-operative and supportive throughout the process and afterwards.

Many of the addicts return to their previous level of addiction due to lack of support system. In order to avoid this, counseling sessions and relapse prevention programs are also conducted. Here patients are helped to identify the warning signs and are provided with the necessary guidance to cope up with the situation. They are encouraged to develop skills to lead a quality life which will help them to shun alcohol. Patients are also encouraged to meet doctors and counselors regularly or timely advice and assistance.
