Kitchen utensils are some of the most useful but overlooked things that we have. Imagine what your life would be like if you had to eat your every day meals without the use of a knife, a fork or a spoon. For example drinking soup would be a lot harder without them.

In the earlier period of western culture, silver utensils were only used by royalty, aristocrats and the extremely wealthy because silver was considered to be a rare and precious metal to be used only by the upper classes. Wooden utensils were some of the earliest types produced in previous centuries. The common people used inexpensive steel and wooden utensils when preparing and eating their meals.

Although wooden utensils might be considered traditional, they are still around and still being used by some individuals. In fact, now modern wooden kitchen utensils are created with fine craftsmanship and are made in a variety of designs. The most common kitchen utensils made from wood include spoons, forks, ladles, mortar and pestles spreaders, pins, and spatulas.

The latest rage is now T&G waxed wooden utensils. Almost everyone is buying them for their modern kitchen sets now. Wooden utensils need extra care and maintenance so they will last a long time. Remember to always hand-wash wooden utensils. By putting wooden utensils in the dishwasher, they will cause the wood to eventually crack due to the heat. Be sure to wash your wooden kitchen utensils with cool water, and mild dishwashing soap and a soft sponge.

After using the utensils for a while you might notice that they feel that the grain of the wood has slightly risen. This is due to moisture and is easily corrected by carefully rubbing the utensil with a piece of sandpaper. After sanding, wash and dry and it will be as good as new. If you don't have sandpaper you could use an old brown bag since it also has abrasive fibers as sandpaper does.

Heavy sanding will remove burns, stains and and any dents that you may find on the utensil. Overnight soaking of any dented areas allows the wood to expand and makes dent removal much easier. These utensils make wonderful, versatile gifts for all kinds of occasions including bridal showers and housewarmings. Every kitchen should be stocked with these helpful utensils.
