There are a great many ways in which a person can be affected by whiplash. Of course, the most common one has to be car crashes. In fact. 94% per cent of whiplash injuries pertain to road traffic accidents. When a person gets whiplash it is caused by soft tissue being damaged, in and around the neck area. This means that any or all of tendons, ligaments, and muscles can be damaged.

There are certain symptoms that are typical of whiplash. Sufferers experience restriction of movement along with pain. It is also common to suffer muscle spasms, along with secondary pain in the arms and shoulders. These are the symptoms of less severe whiplash incidents. More unfortunate victims can experience lethargy, nausea, migraines, and back pain. Whiplash generally shows its symptoms some time after an accident, which means that it is important that a person involved in an accident always visits a hospital.

The greatest way to treat the majority of whiplash cases is rest. Any doctor will say that the symptoms of whiplash will eventually disappear with time. There are certain cases, with more severe whiplash, whereby a sufferer will be given mild exercises from the doctor, in order to ease stiffness and to get the muscles working again.

If a person has suffered whiplash as the result of being injured in a road traffic accident then they can make a compensation claim. The only premise is that the injury has been caused by the negligence of another person. A claim is made against the insurance company of the person that caused the accident. If they are the driver of the car that the victim is in, then this makes no difference: it is always the insurance company of he/she that causes an accident.

As with all legal cases, evidence needs to be provided. Without evidence there is very little chance of a claimant receiving compensation. It is therefore important to take the details of any eyewitnesses. Photographs of the scene of an accident are also important. If any offence has been committed, such as a person leaving the scene of an accident, then the police need to be contacted. Lastly, it is of the utmost importance that the victim goes to hospital. Without medical proof of whiplash, a claim will not be successful.
