Los Angeles might have, per capita, the most beautiful people in the country. Movie stars, millionaires and moms in Mercedes. Okay, L.A.’s obsession with beauty may be the exception to the rule in the rest of America, but certainly, it has more than its fair share of a procedure Los Angeles Plastic Surgeons call ‘Liposuction.’ According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Liposuction was the number one procedure in 2007 for both men and women. Over 456,000 such procedures were done that year. And a good portion of those were done right in Los Angeles.

Why is Liposuction so popular in Los Angeles? If you live here, you know that appearances count in this Southern California media Mecca. In this highly competitive marketplace full of actors, models and folks who just want to look fit and young, many see Liposuction as a shortcut to getting the bodies they really want. For some, Liposuction is the alternative to the more difficult technique: old fashioned weight loss. For others, who have done the work but still have stubborn areas of their bodies that resist all attempts at weight loss, Liposuction is the answer to slenderizing thighs, losing those love handles or to revealing that six pack.

In Los Angeles, it’s not just about looking good, it’s about feeling good about yourself as well. While it’s true that Los Angeles may have a preoccupation with this as compared to other parts of the country, the reality is for those in “the industry”, looking good is a survival technique. This whole preoccupation with how we look can seriously affect not only our jobs but can impact our lives. Because the better you feel, the better you’ll look. Unlike other cosmetic procedures like facelifts and eyelifts performed by a Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon, Liposuction requires little cutting and leaves few scars.

Typically, liposuction is done on particular areas to reduce under-the-skin fat: love handles, chin, tummy, and saddlebags on thighs, bra roll, abdomen, derriere and underarms. The Liposuction procedure leaves the patient with a smoother, more toned looking body. These trouble spots tend to be the things we focus on when we look in the mirror – and it can cause a big hit to our self-esteem.

Susan McCredie (not her real name) is an actress in Los Angeles who had just passed her thirty-second birthday after the birth of her second child. She was finished having children and felt self-conscious about her tummy area, which not only had stretch marks but also seemed to resist all attempts to firm it up again. Her self-consciousness translated to her auditions when she found herself in rooms of lithe, firm actresses and she psyched herself out of several parts before deciding to do something about it. She found a notable Los Angeles Plastic Surgeon who specialized in Liposuction and went for a consultation. The Los Angeles Liposuction Surgeon informed her that she was an ideal candidate, not only because she was young but also because her skin would bounce back from being stretched and look great after the procedure. The Los Angeles Liposuction Surgeon was right. She not only got her shape back, but she got her confidence back as well.

Techniques for Liposuction have improved by leaps and bounds since first being introduced. Originally, Plastic Surgeons used a ‘dry technique’ Liposuction to remove excess fat which meant that a tube was inserted under the skin into subcutaneous fat under general anesthetic. This technique is now obsolete and no longer used because Plastic Surgeons discovered that a considerable blood loss took place from the small capillaries that sat amidst the fat cells. The new and vastly safer technique is done under local and/or general anesthesia and can be done on an outpatient basis. Because the local anesthetic (Lidocaine and Epinephrine) constricts those same capillaries, there is little or no blood loss.

But just because doctors have made Liposuction safer, that doesn’t mean you should be any less vigilant when choosing your Los Angeles Liposuction Surgeon. Because there are risks involved with any type of surgery, though, it’s very important that you look for a Plastic Surgeon in Los Angeles who is highly trained to do this procedure. Board-certified Plastic Surgeons are medically trained and ABPS certified in the specialty of Plastic Surgery to perform Liposuction and you should not settle for anything less than that. Liposuction is not the place to look for the cheapest deal in town, especially in Los Angeles. Seek out a Los Angeles Liposuction Surgeon with lots of experience doing the kind of Liposuction you are interested in and ask to see before and after pictures. A great Liposuction Surgeon will welcome inquiries such as this and be proud of his or her work.

So do your homework before deciding to have any cosmetic procedure done. Perform your due diligence. Remember, you want to look your best, so don’t cut corners here. If you decide to do Liposuction, be clear about your expectations and keep them realistic. Be proactive about your appearance and about your medical treatment.

Our noses give our faces character. It often becomes the object of scrutiny when we look in the mirror and, occasionally, defines us. Nose shape and size is generally decided by genetics and can be influenced by cultural heritage. However, in the melting pot of Los Angeles, the definition of beauty definitely does not include an oversized nose. Take a look at photographs from the eighteen hundreds and you’ll see some tired-looking, road-weary faces: no cosmetics, facials, moisturizer or sunscreen available. And certainly nothing that resembled today’s Facelift.
