Using the Internet to place your long distance calls has become the most recent popular method of calling friends and family. A new form of telecommunication, voice over IP, is a new method that allows users to place long distance telephone calls through their computer, often at drastically discounted, if not free, prices.

For the most part, there are five different types of voice over IP calls that can be made. The first does not involve long distance, and consists of local calls that are made within the users calling area. There are also calls that are not considered long distance, but are also not within the local calling area. Billing for these calls will generally show up on the local part of your phone bill. The third type of voice over IP calls is long distance calls that are placed within your particular state. These calls will appear on your phone bill under your particular long distance carrier. There are also calls that are made outside of the state, and these are of course also long distance and will also appear under the long distance carrier of your bill. Finally, there are international long distance calls that are covered by the carrier of your long distance service.

With the Internet, long distance calling methods have become even more simple and much more cost efficient. Voice over IP, or VoIP, helps to make unlimited long distance calling possible for many people that can't find it otherwise. Voice over IP is cheaper than standard long distance calling plans, because of the way that it works. With VoIP, your voice is changed to a digital format that is then transmitted over the Internet wirelessly. This is much more affective than standard telephone lines, because it costs much less than transferring voice units through telephone lines. This is why VoIP is much cheaper, or even in some cases, free.

There are many different options for you to choose from when deciding to switch to an Internet phone. If you have speaker and microphone capability on your computer, you may be able to call long distance without the need of any additional hardware. If you do not have these capabilities on your computer, you will have to purchase a USB Internet telephone headset in order to place your calls. USB headsets are quite easy to find, and plug right into your computer for you to use.

Before you choose an Internet phone system for you to use, you should definitely do a little bit of research first. This will help ensure that you find the right plan for you to use. Check with various VoIP providers for pricing, so that you can make sure you get the best long distance rates available. Make sure that there are no hidden costs involved that you may get stuck with. If you make a great deal of long distance calls, make sure that you find a company that offers unlimited long distance rates to it's users so that you can get the best deal possible.
