We use this quite a lot at Newbarn Farm self-catering cottages and Angling Centre.

Not actually PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) which is more commonly identified as a glue used in schools and the construction industry.

Our fishing derivative Poly Vinyl Alcohol which is known as PVOH PVOL and the titled and more widely known PVA is a little different. Important for Carp fishing and fishing tournaments a useful fishing tip.

Whilst we have titled this article PVA mesh. I am sure you are all well aware that the product is available in other forms, namely PVA Bags, PVA String, PVA Mesh and PVA Tape.

These are made up from basically two main types, that is string which makes up the meshes and film which makes up the tape and bags.

You won’t be surprised to learn that there is a direct relationship between thickness and solubility.

The thicker the cross section of the PVA the longer it takes to dissolve.
Over the years since its development in 1924 to it’s use in fishing from the 1980’s the balance has been refined to the product we are familiar with now, that is a very useful addition to bait presentation to out fish.

PVA string is made from spinning the plastic into a thread, again the thicker the string the longer it takes to dissolve.

We hope this little introduction has been useful, we are always interested in your comments and will revise all of our articles.

PVA string was the first PVA used for Carp Fishing, having a multitude of uses in tying off bags, using a short piece of PVA to secure the bag.

For modifying fishing rigs to prevent tangling and for long casting, also for manufacturing stringers. It is cheap and long lasting along as long as it’s kept dry.

This is an essential bit of kit for any Carp Angler.

The mesh can be made into different sized and shaped bags ideal for the amount of feed and to suit the conditions.

This is great method because you can produce any mix of ground bait you like. For example a mix of pellets and ground bait, pellets and broken boilies, or just broken boilies etc. so remember if you have somewhere to keep unused bait in prime condition, you can always use it in the bag.

Once the bag contents have been made you can attach the bag to your hook. When you have cast, the bag hits the water and begins to dissolve, once dissolved it leaves your hook bait in the middle of your chosen contents.
A very useful fishing tip for open water fishing.

A useful fishing tip for tying the bag, unless you are an octopus, use a clothes peg to hold the neck of the bag together. This leaves both your hands free to use about 200mm of PVA string to tie the neck.

PVA stringers are made up of a number of baits threaded directly on the string and then tied to the rig, usually somewhere near the hook bait,
Ensure sufficient space, approximately 10mm, is allowed between the baits / strings to allow water ingress into the string and allowing the string to dissolve.

As the string dissolves it pulls the baits closer together presenting small pockets of food to the fish. It is common to use stringers as one 6-10 bait stringer to a rig and cast it out.
Try using 4 or 5 smaller stringers and see how effective these can be.

Best of luck with this information from Newbarn Farm Self-catering Cottages and Angling Centre and these Devon fishing, fishing tips, very useful for Carp fishing, get out your fishing license and go fish!

I have omitted the pictures, for clarity, but they can be seen on the web site.
