If you want to bring cut flowers back to their life, you cannot. But if you want to keep cut flowers last longer, yes you can. So, how can you ensure that they keep fresh? How do you make them last longer? To make cut flowers fresh and beautiful longer, experienced florists always apply proven and useful tricks as follows:

  • Cut the flowers from the plants before sunrise, early in the morning, or late in the evening. Avoid cut them at noon as the stems are going to dehydrate.

  • Choose fresh flowers with fresh leaves without drooping buds

  • Cut them by using a sharp knife. Do not use household scissor to cut. Assure the knife is clean. That is the best way to assure they will not damage during cutting.

  • Harvest flowers at optimum stage. The optimal stage to harvest them varies by the type of them. There are too many types of them to explain here. Information about it can be reached on some books.

  • Cut the stem at a slant (at a 45 degree angle), not straight across, as it exposes more surface area. With more surface, stem can absorb more water. Do not forget to carry a vase or bucket filled with warm water. Once you cut, place it immediately in a bucket of water.

  • Every few days, re-cut the stem under water to disallow air to reach the newly cut stem surface. If you do not re-cut or re-cut stem in open air, the air will enters the stem soon and shorten the flowers' vase life. For best result, re-cut the stem under warm water as warm water usually contain less air than cold water.

  • Damage petals and dried leaves should be removed. Also remove any leaves/foliage that below the water line.

  • Make sure you have enough buckets with enough room, so the flowers are not crowded in the buckets. Flowers should have enough room to move around and get fresh air easily between them.

  • Place the vase in a cool dark place, out of sunlight with enough fresh air. Bathroom or closet is a good one to place in. But do not place the vase in refrigerator.

  • Vase or container and water should be clean. You can clean the vase and change the water every few days to remove any bacteria that can pollute the water.
