Pulmonary Hypertension: A Particular Kind Of Blood Pressure Disorder

 By: Hugh J. Lara
Pulmonary hypertension is believed to be quite a rare kind of blood vessel disorder that affects the lungs in which pressure building up inside the pulmonary artery (a blood vessel leading from the heart to the person's lungs) rises dangerously to become life threatening in certain instances. There are several symptoms of pulmonary hypertension that need to be known and these included breathlessness, fatigue, dizzy spells, chest pain and even fainting.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

There are also times when pulmonary hypertension develops without its real cause being known and in such instances the condition is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension or IPAH. However, IPAH is not a single disease and it is also very rare occurring as it does in only two people out of every million.

The condition known as secondary pulmonary hypertension is one in which doctors are able to identify the known causes of the disease. A very likely cause of secondary pulmonary hypertension is a breathing disorder and emphysema as well as bronchitis while lesser frequent causes include scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus or CREST syndrome.

One problem with pulmonary hypertension is that it is a condition that is very often misdiagnosed and furthermore the condition can progress undetected for a long time and is only identified and diagnosed when it is at an advanced stage. In most cases, pulmonary hypertension seems to be a chronic condition and one for which no known cure is known - making it a disease with a low rate of survival. The only silver lining on an otherwise clouded horizon is that new methods of treatment are constantly being made available to doctors - thereby improving the chance of survival.

In fact, recent information pertaining to rate of survival from pulmonary hypertension seems to indicate that with modern treatments a patient stands to live for between fifteen and twenty years longer as compared to in the past. Should you suspect having pulmonary hypertension it is a good idea to seek medical attention and then it is up to your doctor to decide what kind of treatment will suit your condition the best.

Primary pulmonary hypertension is a disorder affecting the lungs and which also involves a rise in blood pressure in the pulmonary artery that is often caused because of hereditary reasons or because of other unknown reasons. The disease was first identified more than a century ago and much later in the year 1959 another thirty-nine cases were discovered in the USA which is when the disease also got its name.
