Rare Snow Sleds: Overview

 By: Gid Anderson
Early snow sledding was first practiced by the indigenous peoples of North America, specifically the aboriginal tribes of Canada. Sleds were originally used to move important goods and helped people on their transportation on places where wheels often get stuck on the snow. During those times, sleds are basically one of the most vital means of transportation and was named as "Toboggan" by many tribes in Canada, including the Cree and Innu, as well as the Anishinabe peoples, who were known as Chippewa in the U.S. and Ojibwe or Ojibway in Canada. However, the origins of the word toboggan resulted to an intense discussion as one claim that it is derived from the Micmac language of eastern Canada while another side is explained that its roots are from the Anishinabe word nobugidaban.

Despite the dispute about its name, the wood toboggan was considered as the first prototypical snow sled made out of three thin marine hardwood boards that were curved around at the front end using heat, steam, or hot water. Wooden cleats or crossbars are then mounted to hold the boards firmly together, and left to dry in a secured place for two days. After drying, a cord or rope is used to pull the snow sled either by humans or a group of trained dogs to carry big loads of freight for transport. The greatest difference between modern sleds and the original toboggans is that sleds are now used primarily for recreation and sports since there are now fuel powered snow tranportation for passenger and goods transport.

It was a clear, warm summer afternoon on Lake Chaubunagungamaug in Webster, Massachusetts. We were anchored in a quiet cove, playing a lively game of cribbage when I spotted a pair of eagles soaring high above us. It was as if they were playing a game of tag. Then suddenly one of the eagles headed straight down into the water and came back up with a big fish in its beak. He flew to a tall bushy pine tree nearby to enjoy his fresh catch.
Families today are all electronically connected. Facebook, Twitter and texting are the norm today. When I grew up such things were not available to us and many of us have “Happy Memories” of an earlier day. The younger generation today is losing its ability to create "Happy Memories" and I feel for them. Most of the younger generation have not had the chance to see the sun rise over a low hanging fog on a beautiful lake.
