Cape Town has long been the preferred destination of gastronomic gurus the world over and it is not hard to see why. Situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands, with some of the most prolific fresh fruit, vegetable and cheese farms close by, the city has a remarkable array of top-flight restaurants offering a wide range of cuisine.

An added bonus are the Atlantic and Indian Oceans that are literally teeming with seafood in all its various guises - from sardines to lobster to east coast sole.

Variety of the V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront has several diverse award-winning restaurants to sample, allowing the tourist a number of culinary options. But there are other equally dedicated 'foodie' areas in and around the city that beg to be explored.

Jardine Shines
Jardine, in Bree Street in the CBD, is one of the Top 10 Restaurants in South Africa according to the Eat Out Restaurant Awards in 2008. Owner chef, George Jardine, pulled off a major coup by winning the Chef of the Year Award for the second time in a row.

Classified as classic/contemporary, the food is consistently delightful and imaginative. Expect oysters, done in every conceivable way, warthog belly, crayfish risotto and rosemary-infused oxtail!

Sumptuous Seafood
If seafood is the favoured flavour then the City has a number of excellent prospects. Willoughby and Co is located on the Victoria Wharf and is within an easy stroll of all luxury waterfront accommodation. The popular eatery won the Best Seafood Restaurant in the V&A last year and one of its enduring specials is the sumptuous sushi, tipped to be the best in Cape Town.

Try the Baia Seafood Restaurant and the Cape Town Fish Market and Sushi Bar - you will not be disappointed.

For slightly less expensive options that will still enamour the palate, make for the ever-green Ocean Basket and Quay Four Brassiere, all within a hop, skip and a jump of the opulent marina apartments at the V&A Waterfront.

Camps Bay Cuisine
Victoria Road in Camps Bay has become the restaurant strip of the Atlantic Seaboard. There is an amazing array of choice - be it fiscal or culinary - but one of the hits of the season has been Paranga.
Located on the Promenade, with spectacular views across the beach and bay, this trendy seafood restaurant offers gigantic prawn platters, delectable calamari and Norwegian salmon seared with soy, honey and ginger. And for the sweet tooth, their Lindt chocolate brownies are simply heavenly.

Further fantastic fare
If you have the time, go slightly further afield and check out these other highly recommended tourist restaurants in Cape Town:

  • The Black Marlin (Simon's Town)

  • Bloemendal Restaurant (Durbanville)

  • The Harbour House (Kalk Bay)

  • Kitima @ the Kronendal Estate (Hout Bay)
