The first Russian emigrants appeared in France at the beginning of the 19th century as it was fashionable among the aristocrats to come to France. They aimed to get accustomed to the European culture and to master the French language, which was very popular at that time. After the Battle of Waterloo and the victory over the Napoleon’s troops, Russian soldiers came to Paris and discovered the attractiveness and charm of the city. Interesting to notice that in spite of the wars, the Russian people managed to preserve friendly relationships with the French - in 1916, after the capitulation of Russia, more than 44,000 people went to Russia to make war on the French and Macedonian fronts.

In 1917 the Bolsheviks forced the Russian aristocrats, rich people deprived of all their goods and high-ranking officials to leave the country for France. Besides, many soldiers who fought at French battlefronts, decided not to come back in the country because of the then government. In Paris they were ready to do any job allowing them to stay there.

In 1924 France officially recognized the Soviet government and became the main destination for the Russian immigrants. Paris became the “capital of the politic diaspora” for Soviet refugees, people of art and intelligentsia who protested against the new Russian government. Paris was a political shelter of Leon Trotsky from 1933 to 1935, before France exiled him at the instance of his homeland. Before World War II another wave of immigrants came to France. Cultural communities flourished, orthodox churches were built...about 300, 000 Russians lived in France at that time.

After WWII and German occupation some 100,000 prisoners of war, Soviet military men and military industry workers stayed in France. Many of them later immigrated to the USA, some stayed in the country.

After the 1970th France welcomed a new wave of migrants. The first visas were issued to the expatriated dissidents. Many people, taking business and leisure trips, decided not to come back to the home country.

The Perestroika was the time of economic migration: Russian people hoped to find a good job abroad. But the immigration laws became much stricter and it was no easy matter to get a work permission. Many people had to “survive” in Paris. Mixed marriages, fictitious and real ones, became widespread as they gave partners an opportunity to stay in France.

The dream of living in one of the best European countries continues to lure the Russians. Young people come to France to get education or work. And many of them succeed to stay there permanently.
