Seattle's Reputation As Rainiest City Is Undeserved

Seattle's popular standing as one of the nation's wettest cities isn't really justified. With yearly rainfall of thirty-eight inches, the Emerald City is actually bested by forty-three American cities, including New York City, where nearly four feet of rain falls on average each year. But while New York City rain days have more than their fair share of soaking rains, precipitation in Seattle tends to take the form of drawn-out drizzles.

As luck will have it, Seattle residents and visitors touring the city as part of a grand swing of the American Northwest can still find lots to do on Seattle's less than perfect days. Topping my list of indoor suggestions is a visit to one of Seattle's numerous world-class museums. Here's a brief overview of three of the city's top-ranked attractions:

1. The Pacific Science Center at 200 Second Avenue N is a five-building complex that's home to a wide range of science exhibits, a Butterfly House, a planetarium, and two stunning IMAX theatres, one of which boasts IMAX 3D technology. The Center stands underneath the arches of yet Seattle attraction, the Space Needle, and is open seven days a week during the summer season from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

2. The Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center is another of Seattle's museum highlights. Devoted to the nautical history of Seattle and Puget Sound, the Odyssey Center offers four main exhibits and galleries covering the ships, environment, fishing industry and trade connections that make Seattle and the Puget Sound area the maritime hub of the Pacific Northwest. The museum is closed on Monday but is opened to the public Tuesday through Sunday at either 10:00 or 11:00 a.m.

3. Another one-of-a-kind attraction in Seattle is the Wing Luke Asian Museum. Because immigrants from the Pacific Rim regions played such a important part in the development of the Pacific Northwest, the museum is devoted to preserving and promoting Asian Pacific American culture, history, and art. The museum also reminds us with a permanent exhibit of the internment camps used to incarcerate Japanese Americans during World War II.

While Seattle is by no means the nation's wettest city, there are still lots of gray days on the city's horizons. Luckily, there are plenty of museums that can both educate and entertain visitors on one of Seattle's overcast days.
