There is nothing like the feeling of wearing those awesome new shoes for the first time. Many people love new shoes and just seem to keep piling them up. The bottom of your closet can become a shoe graveyard if you are not careful. This can lead to shoes you love getting damaged and lost. If you need to get your closet organized and protect your treasured collection, then you may need to take some steps to get it done.

The first step is to inventory your shoes. Get them all out and pair them up. Shoes with straps can be strapped together and tennis shoes can be tied at the laces if you do not plan on using a shoe rack or special shoe shelf. Get them all out and look at what you have. Chances are, you will need to get creative to fit all of those shoes in the closet space that you have.

The second step is to thin out the herd. Get a box and fill it with shoes that are out of style, do not fit right, have scuffs and scratches, or that you just never wear. Getting rid of just a few pairs can really free up some space. For the ones you plan on keeping, clean them up and make sure that they are worth the space that they will use. Cedar sachets or cedar wooden hangers in your closet can help cut down on humidity and keep your shoes smelling fresh.

Next you need to decide what type of shoe shelf or shoe rack will work for you. If you have a lot of flat dress shoes, sandals and flip flops, over the door shoe organizers can work great. These are often the types of shoes that are easy to separate and they really should not take up a lot of space. You can purchase a shelving system for your floor or the unused front corners of your closet. These shelves can make use of wasted space and get the shoes up off the floor. An inexpensive option is to build tall skinny cubbies up each side of your closet and reserve this space just for shoes. You may decide to make some of the cubbies taller to accommodate boots and other bulky shoes.

Putting a shelf underneath your hanging clothes is another option. You can make the shelf two, three or four tiers to hold as many shoes as you need it to. If you need even more space, you might consider moving your hanging bar up high enough to provide extra shoe space. Dresses and other long items that are cutting into your shoe area can be hung on special clothes hangers that hold them up higher off the floor. When you get your shoes organized, you may just realize that you have room for more!
