If you've done any amount of shopping on the internet, you are familiar with the idea of the internet shopping cart. Ecommerce websites use the shopping cart to not only facilitate a customer's shopping experience but to increase sales as well.

Online, the virtual shopping cart gives you the opportunity to choose items from a store and keep them there until you're ready to check out. An advantage to a virtual cart is that it never gets too full. Online, like in a regular store, once you're done shopping, you checkout. At the checkout your items will be totaled, sales tax and shipping charges added, and a request made for your payment. This is a simple process, because it's so similar to what we've always experienced in the real world.

Online shoppers can select items to purchase on a website by using an ecommerce cart. By pointing and clicking on the items they wish to buy, shoppers put the items into their virtual shopping cart. When they finish shopping, they can take their cart to the checkout. This is a win-win situation in that the jobs of both buyer and seller are made much easier. If a shopper can browse the website and easily put items into a cart, the shopper will like spend more time looking at other items. By keeping shoppers in the store for longer periods, sales and profits can show a marked increase.

A lot of times people who are shopping online aren't in the position to purchase their item or items at the time they find them. It may be they're working on a computer at work, or possibly they don't have a credit card with them that day. By allowing customers to "save" the items in their cart, people are able to go back to the online store at another, more convenient time, to purchase the items they selected. Some carts can hold your items for as long as a month. This capability results in higher sales.

Customers like that when they use an online shopping cart they have the ability to check their total at any time. All they need to do is click on the cart, and they will be shown a subtotal of all the items in their cart. In this way the customer can keep track to make sure he isn't spending too much or to see if he can still buy more while staying within his budget. Some shopping carts will add sales tax and shipping charges to the totals so that the customer knows exactly the amount he is spending.

Online shopping is big business, and the cart feature is just one of the innovations that has made it a success. With it's ease of use, memory capability and totaling feature, it is a valuable tool for both the busy shopper and for the online retailer increasing his bottom line.
