It seems like everyone has a blog nowadays. From small start-ups to national companies, everyone has something to say - and they're saying it online every day in corporate blogs. If you're thinking blogging is just a trend, think again. Businesses get a lot out of blogging--and it's not going away any time soon. If you're considering jumping on the blogging bandwagon, here are a few reasons why you should.

It helps your search engine rankings. Blogs are updated frequently, and that gives your website an edge in the search engines. As you write about the things that are important in your business and industry, you'll naturally include relevant keywords as well--and your site is likely to start ranking for at least a few of them. One of the most obvious benefits of blogging is that it brings added visibility in the search engines.

It makes you more appealing to customers. Your blog gives your company a personality. Which persona you choose depends largely on what will appeal to your customers. If you market to a youthful crowd, choose a tone that's edgy and slightly rebellious. If you're marketing to parents, you can humanize your company by focusing on parenting issues you share with your customers. It's all about finding common ground and a voice they'll like. Humor is appreciated by every demographic.

It's quick, cheap, and easy. You don't need to be a professional programmer or spend a fortune to start a blog. There are many easy blogging platforms out there, and most of them are free. Blogs are easy to begin and quick to update, and they rarely cost any money to set up. It isn't often that you find anything that's quick, cheap, and easy all at once--but blogging fits the bill.

It gives you a mouthpiece. If your company has the misfortune to attract some bad press, your blog gives you a forum where you can defend yourself. It's generally best to respond to negative attention the minute it happens--don't wait for the press to blow things out of proportion. Give an impression of honesty, transparency, and responsiveness in your blog, and your customers are likely to give you the benefit of the doubt.

It educates your customers. Companies pay millions for ad campaigns that attempt to educate customers into buying their products. Why do that, when you can reach just as many people on your blog? Publish case studies and testimonials from customers and clients explaining how your product helped them. Write about the problems your customers face and how your company provides solutions. You'll be able to show your customers exactly why they need you--and you won't have to fit your messages into thirty-second slots.

It establishes you as an authority. A good blog can make a career. Your blog should give your customers a reason to visit by offering content of value. Give them advice on choosing a service or product like yours; write reviews of other products in your industry; or explain the technology involved in your product in a way that your customers will understand. Blogs are an excellent way for new businesses to establish credibility with customers.

Blogging can be a big help to any business. Whether you're just starting out or have been in business for a long time, a blog can be a highly effective way to communicate with your customers and present a positive image online.
