Sleep Apnea is pause of breath during sleep. One or more breath is lost in this cessation, and it occurs through out the sleep. The reason is decreased level of oxygen in blood and can be caused due to obstruction in passage of air, due to a tonsil or the size of the tongue, the jaw structure, or even due to the relaxing of muscles in the path of air. The block obstructing passage of air could be in the nasal cavity as well. The sleeper is generally unaware of this obstruction of sleep, and the bed partner is the one who notices it first. The individual has trouble breathing, and will feel sleepy and tired during daytime. The pause during sleep must of at least 10 seconds to be considered apnea.

Snoring, headache, petulance or even depression, increase in blood pressure and weight, decrease in libido and concentration, are among the many features of this ailment. Lack of peaceful sleep and frequent chocking will cause insomnia, nocturnal urination, etc. and will result in mood swings and lead to a life of total chaos. The disease if left undiagnosed can turn dangerous and can cause heart problems and high blood pressure resulting in strokes or heart attacks. Daytime lethargy can cause dangers like accidents, and work and relationship related problems. Impotence is yet another side effect.

A polysomnogram monitors the individual overnight and determines if he is suffering from sleep apnea. The test is painless, where the machine studies the breathing pattern, level of oxygen in blood and even the brain waves, and checks for any kind of chocking and gasping, or snoring. Sleep apnea is a condition that aggravates with age, and therefore treatment is very important. The treatment is easier if the sleep apnea is mild, and cure can be as simple as changing sleeping posture losing some weight or avoiding alcohol or smoking. Devices are also used to correct the position of jaw, tongue, soft palate etc. which could be obstructing the sleep. A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machine is used to blow air into the nose and prevent any kind of cessation, and is used in case of people suffering from serious sleep apnea. There are also a number of surgeries performed in the mouth, tongue and jaw to solve problems that cause the disease.

There are three kinds of sleep apnea namely obstructive which is ordinary variety, central and complex. Complex sleep apnea is the most dangerous as it is the condition resulting from the first two kinds combined together. Central sleep apnea is the condition where the neurological control over the respiratory system does not work properly, due to the absence of proper signals through nerves. Apnea on a central basis occurs in people who use central respiratory depressants, like alcohol and other tranquilizers like barbiturates. Using central respiratory depressants by those who already suffer from sleep apnea can cause life-threatening consequences. Babies born prematurely also suffer from central sleep apnea.

Individuals suffering from this ailment must be careful about the anesthesia given during surgeries; also surgeries of the oral cavity can cause swellings and cause cessations during sleep. Even the surgeries meant to clear the passage of air can cause some inflammations and disturbance immediately after, making it difficult for the patients. Though snoring is a feature of sleep apnea, snoring always need not mean sleep apnea. One who suffers stops snoring, and breathing for a short while and resumed snoring with a gasp, and it can consider as an obvious sign of disease.

If your husband snores loudly, keeping you awake, you are not alone; about 40 per cent of men snore. In addition to a good night's sleep, there are other good reasons for taking snoring seriously. Loud snorers are far more likely to suffer heart disease and strokes than people who do not snore, or even quiet snorers. On a daily basis, snorers and their partners can be sleepy during the day, potentially affecting driving and other activities that require safety and vigilance.
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. Sleep apnea is defined as a reduction or cessation of breathing during sleep. The three types of sleep apnea are central apnea, obstructive apnea, and a mixture of central and obstructive apnea.
Snoring can be a lot more than an irritant to bed partners and other listeners. It’s often a symptom of progressive sleep apnea syndrome, a disorder that not only stymies the snorer’s slumber but also can have serious effects on blood pressure, risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and even mortality. Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound, due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. The sound may be soft or loud and unpleasant.
According to new research, snoring can increase your risk of developing heart disease. The findings - published in Journal Sleep, a specialist medical journal - demonstrated a significant link between loud snoring and heart disease and strokes.
Sleep Apnea Syndrome refers to transient cessation of respiration during sleep. The most common kind of sleep apnea is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSA) which is defined as the cessation of airflow during sleep preventing air from entering the lungs caused by an obstruction.
Sleep Apnea Syndrome refers to transient cessation of respiration during sleep. There is a sleep test, called polysomnography that is usually done to diagnose sleep apnea. Polysomnography is a study of sleep cycles and behavior, usually done all night long in a sleep center, which involves observing a person at sleep while continuously charting brain waves, muscle activity, breathing, eye movements, and heart rhythms.
Recently, a new form of treatment for snoring has been introduced. This involves the implantation of three non-absorbable, nonreactive implants into the palate. This procedure is done under topical/local anesthetic in the physician's office. These implants serve to stiffen and dampen the vibration of the palate and thus relieve snoring. Patients are able to return to work within a day or two.
