It can be quite a challenge to stop smoking. If it were easy then there wouldn't be so many products on the market that claim to help you quit. If you've decided that now is the time the quit smoking, then you may find it helpful to learn everything about smoking cessation that you can. Surround yourself with a bundle of knowledge and wisdom so that you can select the best weapons possible to use in your fight. The more tricks that you have in your arsenal, the more likely you are to succeed.

There are two main schools of thought about the best ways to break a smoking addiction. Some claim that the addiction is more psychological than physical. For folks who stand in this corner of the debate, smoking cessation is achieved by winning the battle in your mind that says you need to smoke. If chewing gum isn't working then you may need to look into some of the books available to help smokers find better and more productive ways to fill their idle time. Setting clear goals and having a plan of action is the best way to prepare yourself for those sudden cravings that will pop up when you are trying to quit. Your doctor is also a great resource for this kind of information.

The other line of thinking is that smoking is purely a physical addiction. The body is used to having nicotine and when you take it away the result is cravings that can be impossible to resist. In recent years there have been a number of products introduced in the consumer market that are designed to help you reduce those cravings. Everything from chewing gum to arm patches can now be purchased with controlled amounts of nicotine in them. The point isn't to replace smoking with a patch, but instead to gradually reduce the dosage of nicotine introduced into the body.

Others of course, decide that the best smoking cessation method for them is to just quit. They don't want drugs or psychology, they just don't want to smoke anymore. One common side effect experienced by people who quit this way is significant weight gain. To keep themselves busy and to fight off cravings, they often find themselves snacking or drinking soda and other sugary beverages. Sadly, many people who quit this way grow frustrated with the weight gain and decide to start smoking again just so thy can lose the extra pounds that they have put on. They feel like the are forced to choose between two unhealthy lifestyles, and the urge to smoke is too easy to give in to.

Before starting any smoking cessation program, it is important to realize that it is an addiction. Just like any other addiction, you need to understand before you start that it probably won't be easy. Expect that there will be difficult times and have a plan in place of what you are going to do before those sudden cravings pop up. If they surprise you, then you will almost surely give in and sneak a cigarette. If you have a plan though, you can spring into action the moment you start feeling an urge develop. Take off for a jog or call a trusted friend who won't let you smoke to go for coffee. Maybe just get up from where you are sitting and make yourself busy for a moment until the urge passes. The key is to not stay idle and think about how badly you want to smoke.
