An integral part of Credit Card Processing is issuing receipts and slips for customer signatures, thereby concluding the initial phase of the transaction. You may choose between a printer that is in-built with your credit card processing terminal and a stand alone printer. Also, you will have to decide between the two main types of printers: dot matrix and thermal. Your final selection ought to be a result of the following criteria:
- Price,
- Speed, and
- Reliability.

First, let's differentiate between Dot Matrix and Thermal Receipt Printers:

Dot Matrix Printers are impact printers that use pins and an ink ribbon to print on regular paper. These are inexpensive and also tend to be slower than other alternatives available in the market.

Thermal Receipt Printers use heat and special heat-sensitive paper to generate receipts. While they cost more, they offer the advantages of being faster, quieter, and more reliable than dot matrix printers.

Third types of printers called Inkjet Printers are also available. They do offer the unique feature of printing in multiple colors, but have neither the speed of thermal printers nor the low costs of dot matrix printers.

Following are some stand-alone printers, recommended for use in conjunction with a credit card terminal:

Verifone P250 Printer- the VeriFone P250 is compatible with many credit card terminals, and comes with a Low Price Guarantee. Its 7-pin dot matrix printer produces crisp legible receipts at a rate of 2.1 lines per second.

Peripheron Thermal Printer- This is a thermal printer that is faster, quieter, smaller and more economical to operate than older technology impact printers. Paper rolls are 50% bigger than normal and paper loading is easier. Prints are sharp and easy to read. Super fast printing produces 12.5 Lines per Second!

Verifone P900 Printer- the VeriFone Printer 900 is perfect for large volumes of transactions and is compatible with many brands of terminals.

Hypercom P8 Printer- the Hypercom P8 Printer is available as either a 40-column friction feed roll printer (P8F) or a 23-column sprocket feed printer (P8S). Both Hypercom P8 models feature bi-directional printing (which improves print speed), a small footprint, quiet and smooth operation, and both are compatible with all Hypercom T7 terminals. The Hypercom P8 prints 4 lines per second.
