Speed reading is essential in today's world of fast living. Academics, students and research fellows in particular need to cultivate and perfect this art. For that matter this skill is necessary for anyone who needs to glean information from books, journals, dailies, in a short period of time. In order to master this art one has to first determine what information one wants to gather from that book or magazine.

By flipping through that book rapidly you can make out the broad gist of the book and learn only the vital details. But you have to learn certain speed reading techniques if you want to grasp the whole concept of the book or journal concerned. Such techniques include cutting down on fixing time and hop back time, and building on the word count per block.

The various techniques of speed reading are as follows:

Speed reading method #1 - In order to read faster, it is essential to cut down on fixing time. It usually takes us a quarter of a second to read a block of words. This method involves the reduction of that time. By decreasing that time, we can reduce the amount of time needed to go through the whole book. When we teach our minds to reduce fixing time, we can glean more information in a shorter time period.

Speed reading method #2 - Another technique to read faster is to push your word count up or the number or words you read in one glance. For example, if you place the page at a little distance away from you eyes, you will be able to read a larger block of words in less time. You are able to increase the number of words you read within a certain time frame. This method can help anyone read much faster.

Speed reading method #3 - One problem which has to be overcome while reading is called the 'hop back time'. While reading, your eyes tend to hop back to the previous sentence. In order to prevent this from happening, you could use an indicator, a pencil or your finger to underline the sentence you are reading. In this way, your attention will remain focused on that particular sentence. This will increase your reading speed.

Significance of Speed Reading:

By rapidly reading through a book's content page, you are able to form an idea about what that book is all about. As a result, you will know what you need to learn from that book. Do not reread! You need to know what you must get from the book and in which chapters to find it. As previously mentioned, speed reading is a must know for academicians in today's world so they will be able to gather more data in a shorter period of time.

Let's take this example. Say a student has to write a project for which he/she needs some books. Now if he/she goes to buy the book it is hardly possible to go through every single detail of the book. He has to be satisfied with a quick run through. It is here that speed reading methods come in handy. Normally one can read 4 to 5 words per second. But an accomplished speed reader can manage up to 12 words per second. With determination one can, if one tries, become a very rapid reader. If you keep the abovementioned speed reading tips in mind, all you will need to accelerate, is some practice.
