A shed is a construction with a single room that is commonly used for storage or, in some cases for working. More and more sheds are built for hobbies that require extended space. They are either separate from the house or can be put up very close to it. They vary according to the climate, involving certain construction materials or according to the design - with different shapes when one focuses more on the esthetics of such a building. The largest sheds can be found near a farm, taking into account their utility

The smallest sheds are usually those for domestic use, which can be easily set up by an inexperienced owner and are usually made of wood. The space is utilized for tool storage, with multiple hooks and shelves for space effectiveness. They can be vertical, horizontal, Dutch-styled, saltbox-styled or ones that you can fit into a corner. Apart from these there are larger domestic sheds which are consequently more expensive. These can provide space for different hobbies, repairs to your car or other machineries and tinkering. More and more people opt for large sheds as working places, in some cases, or for relaxation purposes, especially in the United Kingdom. They are equipped with electrical outlets, ventilation, electrical lighting and many more depending on the purpose of the shed and the amount of time spent there.

Sheds usually make you think of a farm or an agricultural area, but they have been developed to serve many other purposes, in many other regions. Apart from agricultural sheds there are bicycle sheds with metal frameworks to support the bicycles; boat sheds usually very colored, used for private boats; railway sheds storing the goods that fallow to be delivered or as shelter for locomotives.

The materials used for building sheds can differ as mentioned before according to the intended use. Wooden sheds are usually easy to modify if needed or wanted but cannot do very well on harsh weather and are predisposed to mold, split, warping and mildew. For these reasons they need regular maintenance. Cedar wood is a more resistant material. Metal sheds are preferred for their resistance in time although they eventually rust and are more prone to damage from accumulated water and ice. Also, those made of steel should be galvanized while the entire building should be secured with a concrete foundation. Plastic sheds are made up of PVC and polyethylene and are less expensive than metal sheds. Moreover, they don't present the usual damages that a wooden shed suffers.
