The teen pregnancy rate in America has hit an all-time low, while pregnancy out of wedlock has hit a unprecedented high. The rate of caesarian section births has also hit an all-time and the rate of birth given by women 30 and older has risen to a higher level than seen in the last 40 years.

According to HealthDay News' report on the Annual Summary of Vital Statistics: 2005, "The rate of teen births fell to 40.4 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19. That's the lowest rate ever recorded in 65 years for which we have consistent data. It's quite impressive."

The decline in teen pregnancy can be attributed to several factors including: more affective, lager choice of contraception, higher awareness and affective promotion of safe sex and pre marital abstinence, and providing all around better healthcare.

Although teen pregnancy is falling, unwed pregnancy is on the rise. The number of unmarried pregnancies rose in 2005 to a record 1,525,345. The increase could be to a rising number of couples choosing to live together before marriage, or the recent increase in the number of divorced couples.

Also, according to the Nation Center for Health Statistics, "For the first year in nearly a decade, the preterm birth rate declined, from 11.8 percent to 11.6 percent of all births. The preterm rate has risen fairly steadily over the past two decades. However, the low birth weight rate (7.6 percent) did not improve in 2000."
