Telling Your Children When You First Learn You Suffer From Heart Disease

 By: Tauqeer Hassan
People living under a same roof, sharing their good and bad times with each other, love, affection, care and attachment all this make a one complete family. A family is a unit and the members of the family are like a part of each other, one feels pain, every other member feels it too regardless of the age difference. Younger or older they are so linked with each other that even a small problem can disturb the entire family.

Hiding things from each other is definitely had a bad impact on other members, especially on your children. Being a parent or elder of the family you need to develop such an understanding with your children that you can tell them everything. Father and mother are the one who need to handle things properly. Keeping your children in black means you are putting them in a serious state of mind. Whether it's news of financial crisis, illness, or any other matter always trust your children and openly share with them the facts.

Your dealing with your children manly depends on your condition and precisely on the ages of your children. It is sometimes may not be necessary to tell the whole thing to your too young kids. But still if you are suffering from any serious disease like heart problem and you often rush to hospitals for regular treatment or for major surgeries, it becomes inevitable to let your young children know about the facts in more simple ways.

Fiona, whose husband is suffering from heart problem, shares her experience regarding her children. She states: it was quite easy to deal with young children as we need not to explain the whole thing to them. She said we told them their Dad had to go to go for an operation and would stay in hospital for few days. She adds, her one year Natalie, didn't have any idea, three old Christopher didn't react as well. However, she says that her seven year old daughter Christine was shocked to see the scar on her Dad's chest. She explained to her the matter but not in extreme detail. Fiona believes that there is no use of giving young children enough information about which they don't have much knowledge.

Older children or teenagers are in good age to understand the things properly. Fiona says: By the time John had his second bypass five years later they were all much older, but by then we had started the Cardiac Club, so they had seen cardiac patients and it was less of an event. It is quite easy for older children to manage the things. Young children are not mature and their minds are too young to understand the bitter realities of life.

For teenagers and older children, it becomes necessary to air their fears and worries and they often feel hesitancy to share it with you, in that case it may be helpful to them if they disclose them before understanding teacher, grandparent, or adult friend.
