Interpreting involves the orally rendering the meaning of dialogue which is spoken in one language into another language while retaining its essence. Interpretation is often thought of as an extension of translation, which is the other basic language service. The difference between the two is that while translation is done in writing, interpretation is an oral process. Interpretation is a rapidly growing industry in its own right. This is a result of rapid globalisation leading to an increase in cross-cultural encounters.

Interpreter - Language Specialist

Interpretation requires a high level of skill and fluency in both languages. The interpreter must remember what has been said, understand the differences between the two languages, rapidly process this information and speak correctly - all without faltering. A good interpreter thus has the ability to quickly, accurately and appropriately convey the whole message from one language to another. The interpreter is aware of the cultural differences involved in the process, and acts in a professional at all times. He or she maintains absolute discretion, and is unbiased and objective.

Interpretation in the Modern Age:

Traditionally, there are only two types of interpretation - Simultaneous and Consecutive. Interpretation services are commonly seen at political talks and discussions. But globalisation and its effects has helped redefine interpretation services.

Interpretation is now a common feature in a number of areas. Interpretation services are required in a variety of environments. These include:

- Business Interpretation
Interpretation imparts a certain drive and tone to various business meetings, conferences and symposiums. On such occasions, it is expected that people from many countries and cultures meet and work towards a common business goal. Interpretation helps remove the language barrier and is an effective way to analyze the subject being discussed at the business meeting.

- On-site Interpretation Services
This calls for the personal involvement of an interpreter. On-site interpretation is required at places where one-on-one meeting between native and non-native speakers of a language meet to focus on common goals. In addition, on-site interpretation service can be used to translate texts in a foreign language.

- Escort Interpretation Service
Sometimes the interpreter has to accompany a business meeting, travel to distant places with clients for business and non-business settings. This service is called Escort Interpretation, and can be an exciting experience for the interpreter.

With the advent of the Internet and great advances in technology, interpretation can now be done with the aid of videoconference equipment, where the interpreter is not required to be physically present at the site of the meeting. Many areas like medicine, education, entertainment and science are now using interpretation services. With so many opportunities knocking, the field of interpretation services is poised to benefit from the challenges.
